My Place - World Vision New Zealand

My Place
In countries like New Zealand, we have schools, shops, good roads, doctors, hospitals, playgrounds,
parks, swimming pools, libraries and other things that help us live well.
Have a look around your community. See if you can spot all the things that make it a good place to
live. Make a list of these things and where they are.
In places where Worldbuddies live, it’s often these things that are missing in their community. That’s
what makes it a hard place to live and why sponsoring your Worldbuddy is so important.
Where I Live
Draw a picture or map of the place where you live and go to school.
Here is some ideas to get you started.
Drawing
On a big sheet of paper (A3),
draw each of the important plac
es in your
community. Join these up with
some roads. Don’t worry if it’s
not exactly right.
Cut out some labels and write
the name of each place on a labe
l. Now, see if
someone in your family can wo
rk out what all the places are and
match the labels
with your drawings. Stick your
labels on with cellotape.
Map
Ask someone to help you photocopy on A3 paper a map of where
you live. Make labels or stickers for all the places you think make this
a good place to live. Find these places are on your map and label them.
Use coloured pens to decorate the labels.
Try to imagine what it might be
like not having these things in your
community.
How would this change your life?
On the computer
Draw a picture or design a map on the
computer of the
place where you live. Add places you
think are important
for making it a good place to live. Des
ign labels for each
item you’ve added.

Worldbuddy #8
Communities in New Zealand have things like schools,
shops, playgrounds, hospitals and libraries. Water comes
to our homes through pipes and electricity through wires.
There are lots of things we have in the place where we
live that we take for granted. Some children in the world
grow up in places where they don’t have these things. For
these children it can be much harder to go to school, get
clean water or go to the doctor.
Write a letter to your Worldbuddy and
describe your community and ask them
about theirs.

Use the letter outline to the right to get
started. You might want to come up with
some of your own questions to ask.
Remember to:
1. Use the page in your sponsorship pack with your
Worldbuddy’s picture on it to:
• Write your sponsored child’s full name and reference number on the top of your letter and on the back of
the envelope.
• Address the envelope to the World Vision office for
the country your sponsored child lives in.
2. NEVER write your personal address details on the letter itself.
