CONCLUSION
In this study the writer analyzes two main characters, taken from novel The
King, The Witch And The Priest by Pramoedya Ananta Toer: Calon Arang and Empu
Baradah. The story portrays the characteristics of Calon Arang and Empu Baradah.
Where both of the characters are oppositional from each other, Calon Arang is the
bad character while Empu Bardah is the good one.
After analyzing both characters, the writer found their various characteristics
presented in the novel, Calon Arang characteristics are: temperamental, and arrogant,
but sympathetically she is yet a loving mother. Empu Baradah characteristics are:
wise, friendly, but somehow he is a less concerned father. In the story: Calon arang
often causes others to suffer from plague which she spread on using her black magic,
not only that, she also killed anyone else who did things wrong to her, but in contrary
to her darkness she is yet a loving mother who will do anything for the sake of her
daughter’s happiness. Opposite to Calon Arang, Empu Baradah is an amicable man
who readily helps anyone in need; he is also a wise man since he always gives advice
to others. But he is also an unconcerned father, because he never asks his daughter
opinion before he got married to other woman, which later this marriage causes his
daughter’s to leave the house.

Through structuralism theory the writer analyzing the characters, and found
opposite ideas in both of them. The opposite ideas between them, in structuralism
theory are called binary opposition. Based on a theory known as the relationship
between two ideas which are differences from each other produce some meaning: we
know temperament person because there is a friendly person, we know arrogant
person because there is a wise person, and we know a loving person because there is
an unconcerned person.
Those binary oppositions portray the concept of both main characters in the
story; Calon Arang is a bad character while Empu Baradah is good character. The
concept of Calon Arang that she must loses from Empu Baradah because she is
described as bad character. In the story she described as temperament and arrogant
person, however she is a loving mother. She will do anything including putting her
own life at risk for the sake of her daughter’s happiness, nevertheless in the story she
is portrayed as a witch. Hence, in the end Calon Aarng must die after combating
Empu Baradah. Whereas, the concept of Empu Baradah as a winner because he is the
good character in the story. Regardless he is good character, he is an unconcerned
father because his marriage has grimly impacted his daughter and caused her to leave
the house. This suggest that bad character always loses regardless any virtue he or she
has. This does not occur to good character although the character has some
characteristics defect yet they are always set to win.

In conclusion, structuralism is approach that related to textual analyses; the
foundation is General in Linguistic of Ferdinand De Saussure. He believes that
language is not a group of words that stand in individually. They will produce a
meaning by marking the difference between the words. Difference means our ability
to recognize reality such as: concepts, words, and object. Then, the difference
between the words or concepts in structuralism is called binary opposition.
Furthermore, the writer found several binary oppositions between Calon Arang and
Empu Baradah characteristics by using this approach. Calon Arang characteristics
are: temperament, arrogant, and loving mother whereas Empu Baradah characteristics
are: wise, friendly, and unconcerned father they are opposite to each other. In this
analysis, the writer found that Calon Arang is the bad character that must be lost by
Empu Baradah because he is good character in the novel, even though strength
personality can be found in Calon Arang, she is presented as a witch. Different to
Empu Baradah although some weakeness found in his personality, he is presented as
a good character. It means, binary opposition is emphasizing the relationship between
Calon Arang and Empu Baradah characteristics. Thus, in their relationship, it
produces a meaning that Calon Arang is bad character and should be defeated to
Empu Baradah as a good character.
