Distinguished Professor Vellutino’s research has been concerned with reading development, the cognitive underpinnings of reading, and the relationship between reading difficulties and various aspects of language and other cognitive functions. This research has generated numerous articles in refereed journals, in addition to a seminal book summarizing theory and research in the study of dyslexia and numerous book chapters addressing the causes and correlates of reading difficulties in young children. His most recent studies have been concerned with early identification of children at risk for early and long-term reading difficulties and early intervention on behalf of such children, in the interest of developing assessment and remedial procedures for preventing reading difficulties. Using response to kindergarten and first grade Dr. Yan's research program mainly concerns dynamic and complex relations between contemporary technologies and human development ( e.g. whether young children are able to understand the Internet as a complex artifact, how school students' knowledge of Internet safety changes over time). His current research programs are focusing on two areas: Cyber behaviors (e.g. how people make decisions when receiving emails, how people develop Computer Vision Syndrome) and mobile phone behaviors (e.g. how to use mobile phones to collect data, whether cell phone use leads to brain tumors).
