From the desk of Mrs. Busse, Principal
As I look back upon last quarter, we have many
reasons to celebrate! Over 100 of our students had
perfect attendance. Attendance is a crucial piece in
student success in school. I commend these
students for making school a priority in their lives.
th
On November 8 we recognized our students’
academic and attendance accomplishments at our
first awards assembly for the 2010- 2011 school
year. Our hats go off to these students. On the last
pages of this newsletter you will find the names of
all of our students and their accomplishments for
the first quarter. We wish these students continued
success and encourage those who are not quite
where they need to be to continue with their efforts.
th
November 19 was Dayton Pubic Schools’ Principal
for a Day event. On this day community members
serve as principal in many of our school buildings.
We were fortunate to have Dr. Herbert Martin as our
building Principal for a Day. Dr. Herbert Martin is a
professor at the University of Dayton. He is a poet,
lecturer, actor, narrator and is known nationally for
his scholarship and unforgettable performance of
Paul Laurence Dunbar’s dialect poems. It was
wonderful to have Dr. Martin with us for the day. I
am not sure who enjoyed themselves more, the
students or the staff.
The holidays are officially here. We hope that you
will celebrate the holiday season with us at our
th
Holiday program on December 16 at 6:00 pm.
This promises to be a wonderful night of
entertainment and enjoyment for kids of all ages.
Mr. Corey Turner, our Music Teacher, has been
working diligently with the students and parents
preparing for the program. There have been
COMPUTER LAB
OPEN HOURS
The computer lab is open every
Monday and Wednesday from 3:00

numerous nightly practices and regular sewing
parties for the many costumes needed in this
production. A special thank you goes to the
entire Louise Troy community for your support
and help in the efforts of what promises to be a
tremendous celebration of our students talents
and the holidays. Make sure to mark your
th
calendars for December 16 !
Welcome to our staff !
We welcome to our staff Mr. Thomas Massie! Mr. Massie
is our Math Intervention Teacher (MIT).
HOLIDAY AID
Nov. 10th – Dec. 13th
Student Council is sponsoring the Holiday Aid
Campaign. We ask students to bring in canned
goods and non-perishable items for this food
drive. The donations will benefit those in need
in our community. If we each can give a little it
will mean a lot to many families! The classroom
with the largest donation to Holiday Aid will earn
an out of uniform day.
Parents are always welcome at Louise Troy!
Building Hours
8:20 – 3:00
Student supervision begins at
8:20. Please help us ensure
your child’s safety by making
sure they do not arrive before
there is supervision.

Mr. Deron Bell, Louise Troy’s Educational and Community Resource Coordinator, is
responsible for linking community resources to Louise Troy, one of the multiple schools
he serves. We have community links with Mr. Marlon Shackelford of BBI (Black Brothers
Involvement) providing weekly 7th and 8th grade boys mentoring, leadership, and life
skills. Ms. Kisha Foster of YWCA Dayton Girls Inc., provides weekly 7th and 8th grade
girls with resources and tools that are needed to reach their highest potential in life while
evaluating goals and values, and the skill set to avoid unreasonable risk, losing
everything and not gaining anything.
This fall our 8th grade students are participating in Success Skills, a Junior Achievement
program. Each week a volunteer from the Dayton Rotary Club visits our classrooms to
provide our students with engaging, academically enriching and experiential learning
sessions in work-readiness education and career perspectives. Topics discussed
include: rapport building, career choices, communication, conflict resolution,
cooperation, effective teamwork, job interviewing, problem-solving and workplace
values. Skills such as active listening, analyzing information, brainstorming, critical
thinking, deductive reasoning, interpreting information, oral and written communication,
problem-solving, public speaking, self-assessment and working in groups are explored.

Early Childhood Education News
We have been working hard this quarter. We are counting from 1-10, learning how to identify
our names and learning the difference between living and non-living things. Starting on
Monday, we will see who can count from 1-10. If your child counts farther than that, we will
have them identify those numbers. They will have an activity sent home with them on Thursday
for homework along with the Book-in-a Bag. We will also introduce a letter a week and send
home activities for your child to work on. Please remember that we are not allowed to send
home worksheets.
However, your child will be sent home activities that they need to work on during the week.
Please make sure that you work with them.

CUB’S CORNER cont.
HEY KDG PARENTS!!!
The Kindergarten classes are
hard at work getting ready for
first grade! We need more
crayons and pencils. HELP
US!! We need you to work on
first and last names –
recognizing them and writing
them. We have been working
on high frequency words: I, see,
me, my, like, a and you. Start
building a flash card system
adding words as we go.
Currently we are working on
s,t,n,m and a. You can help by
checking your child’s school
bag daily, looking at their work,
and reviewing it with your child.
Remind your child to follow
rules and be a good citizen.
We will be having a reward at
the end of December.
Mrs. Haywood’s 2nd
graders have been
reading and building
their estimation skills.
Students are required
to read at least two (2)
books each weekend.
For each book they
read, they must fill out
a “Booklink”. What’s
the fun part? Each
“Booklink” is traded in
for an “estimation
ticket”. Estimation
tickets are filled out by
estimating how many
items are in the jar at
our estimation station.
The student with the
closest estimation
wins a prize. So, the
more you read, the
more chances you
have to win.
Ms. Byrd’s students are hard at
work on increasing their word
recognition. They are also
practicing recognizing high
frequency sight words at their
grade level and learning their
ringed personal sight words in
context. The students are to
read nightly to help increase
their word recognition and
decoding skills. My third
graders have been provided
with a “Student’s Reminder for
Decoding” handout. All
students benefit from extra
reading experiences. You can
share reading aloud with your
child through the following
activities:
¾ Stop part of the way
through the story and
ask your child to predict
what will happen next.
¾ Ask your child how the
story made him/her feel.
¾ After reading the story,
ask your child to
suggest a different way
the story could have
ended.
Reading together is fun!! Help
your child start reading more

Mrs. Saxena’s 3rd grade class is working hard on
different kinds of Graphic Organizers i.e. venn diagram,
story map and K.W.L., to compare and contrast. In
Reading, students are continuously working on fiction
and non-fiction comprehension. Every week they work
on new spelling words to improve their phonics and
vocabulary. They are learning to rearrange words,
sentences and paragraphs to clarify meaning. Make
sure your child does their Book Reports every month. It
helps them in Reading and Writing and it helps them to
become fluent in both.
In Social Studies, students are understanding directions
to locate places and to interpret maps.
In Math, we are focusing and reviewing on regrouping in
addition and subtraction of 2-3 digit problems. They
have learned clue words to work on “problems of the
day”.
Students had to decide on a Science project before Nov.
th
11 for the Science Fair. Parents, thank you for helping
them.
Homework is assigned daily.
Ms. Cox’s class is in Unit 2 “Celebrating Traditions” in the
reading series. Throughout this unit, the students are able to
identify a wide range of the different traditions that exist among
the many cultures of the world. The students have started
cursive handwriting and will need to practice at home regularly.
Each child will receive a cursive handwriting folder to help them
with this new writing method. In Math, the students continue to
work through the multiplication and division facts and identify
the patterns with each number. In Science, we will be looking
at and studying fossils. Reading and interpreting maps was
the key focus in Social Studies for November.
Student of the Month: Jaylin Wright- A sweet young
student that always comes to school with a good attitude
and a big smile to brighten your day! She is a great role
