2 Day Full Works Introduction to Watercolour
Everything you need to know about watercolour in just 2 days! We’ll cover the basics of what makes a
good watercolour kit; mixing 80 colours from just 3 tubes; wet in wet, and glazing techniques, how and why
we stretch paper; painting flat and graded washes; brush technique; and how to paint a super simple but
stunning landscape. (The June and July painting breaks cover the same course content but at a more
relaxed pace).

Drawing and Painting Chickens
Learn how to draw simple chickens (including Sarah’s famous demonstration of how to turn a sketch of a
cat’s head into a chicken ☺) and make some lovely simple watercolours painting from our live models in the
orchard!

workshops......

to painting flowers and other gifts from nature with some beautiful relaxing music playing in the background.

Weds 27 & Thurs 28 May 2 Day Easy-Peasy Drawing Workshop – “Drawing for the terrified!”
Make friends with that pencil! Sarah will share lots of secrets to make drawing so much easier: How to get
proportions right; use light and shadow to make things look 3D; learn to draw faces, people, animals, still
lives.

On location In Totnes - Windows and Doors in Line and Wash
technique
We’ll work in the hall I have hired on the main street, and also on location in the little medieval streets and
lanes to find beautiful architectural detail to draw. Gothic, Medieval, Regency details abound within just a
100sq meters of our base. Love history? You’ll adore this workshop! Just £55, please bring your own
lunch.

Quick Sketches with
Watercolour Pencils
Lots of informative demonstrations from Sarah on how to use watercolour pencils in several different ways
to produce speedy and impressive colour sketches for holidays or for collecting reference for painting back
at home. Lots of sketching fun in this fantastic location. Just £55, please bring your own lunch.
NB: The 2 Totnes Workshops are not held at Sampsons Farm, but in Totnes, but people wishing to
attend them and intending to stay B&B at Sampsons Farm are welcome to have a lift to and from
Totnes with Sarah ☺

Watercolour Painting Break - 3 or 4* day option
Residential at Sampsons Farm or non-residential. The first 3 days cover the course content of the 2 day
full Works Introduction to Watercolour but at a more relaxed pace, and with certain periods working outside
in the peaceful surrounding environs of the medieval thatched farmhouse, and the orchard and paddock
with the chickens and geese. *The optional 4th day will focus on how to paint skies, and will include a trip to
Dartmoor to paint skies on location.

3 Day Getting to Grips with Acrylics
Learn about how to mix colours / how to use brushes, knives and other objects to paint with / what palettes
to use/how to prepare your painting surface/ how to create tantalising texture /and what mediums can help

3 day Watercolour Painting Break

Horses: How to draw and paint them – 3 day treat for
horse & pony lovers!
We’ll be looking at how to draw a horse’s head from different angles; the proportions of a horse’s body;
drawing tricky bits like hocks and fetlocks, etc, and how to capture a horse in watercolour. If you paint in
another medium then feel free to bring your materials along and Sarah is happy to give you tuition on your
own medium, although all demonstrations will be in watercolour. The first day will be spent drawing and the
following 2 days will be a mixture of painting and drawing.
Mon 24 & Tues 25 August
Fashion Illustration
A 2 day course in drawing and painting stylish figures and clothes using pencil and watercolour. We’ll look
at those elegant “stretched proportions” of super models, typical fashion poses and how to capture them
within minutes, how to mix flesh-tones, create hairstyles, create effects such as silk, fur and leather. Great
for aspiring fashion designers: GSCE and A level art students, as well as anyone who just likes the idea of
having a go. Advice also given on portfolios for fashion colleges.

3 Day Watercolour Painting Break. - Suitable for all levels
Does the idea of sitting in an orchard or a field happily sketching and painting appeal to you?
Day 1:
Essential techniques in watercolour (even if you paint often you may be surprised by some
of these!)
Also short spells working in the orchard where the chickens are...
Day 2 & 3:
Weather permitting, we’ll be sitting in fields and by the River Teign (virtually on our doorstep)
to sketch & paint. In case of bad weather we’ll use the studio and work from either Sarah’s or your own
photos of The Great Outdoors....

Sketching and painting around the old farmhouse, in the orchard with the chickens, in the village and by the
river. This is not as focused on being taught beginners watercolour techniques but is designed more as a
peaceful and relaxing quiet space for painters, and beginners too, if they like, to come along to paint and
sketch with Sarah, with a morning and an afternoon demonstration each day of a particular technique or
subject matter.
NB: Watercolour will be the main medium but participants are welcome to bring their own medium of choice
along to use if they wish. Sarah is qualified to give advice on any medium.

an further ten minutes to explore the sea or Dartmoor for dinner, too.
