Year 9 German Home Learning Booklet Learning Skills Name: Tutor Group: Teacher: Given out: Monday 6 June Parent/Carer Comment: Staff Comment: Target: Hand in: Monday 13 June This homework booklet will help you to develop and practise your skills in languages and give you a chance to reflect on your progress. It contains some of the key skills you have learned this year and which will be vital for your GCSE course. Each exercise is labelled as: Must: All pupils must try to complete. Should: All pupils should attempt. Could: Some pupils could try to complete. Pupils must complete the self-evaluation boxes at the end of the booklet. All learning objectives are in accordance with the new Key Stage 3 framework for languages. Exercise 1a Cognates are words which are the same or similar in another language e.g. Technologie = technology. If you don’t have a dictionary to hand you can often work out the meaning of a German text by guessing the meaning of words which look similar to words in English. Guess what these cognates mean in English based on words they look like. To check your answers use a dictionary or an on-line dictionary such as wordreference.com. Apfel- ………………………………… Kompromiss - ……………………………… ……………………………….. kompliziert - ……………………………… Dame - ………………………………… finden - ………………………………. akzeptieren - ………………………………… Haselnuss stinken ………………………………… Die Post - - - ………………………………. Exercise 1b There are also lots of false cognates (falsche Freunde – false friends). These look very similar in both languages but actually mean different things. This can confuse you but they need to be learned. Words can also often have two meanings, one which is similar to English but one which is completely different. See if you can guess what these false cognates mean but check them in a dictionary before you write them in. also - ……………………………….. Gymnasium - ………………………………. Art - ……………………………..… Lokal - ……….………………………. ..…………………………….. Marmelade - ……………..……………….. bekommen - ………………………………… Note - …………………..…………… Brand - seriös - ………………..……………… bald - ……………………………….. Exercise 2- Forming the Past (perfect) Tense To form the perfect tense in German you need a subject (person or thing doing the action), an auxiliary verb (supporting verb – either haben or sein) and a past participle (part of the verb in the past). Remember you need to choose the appropriate part of the auxiliary verb that agrees with the person or thing doing the action, e.g. du + hast haben – to have sein – to be (I) (You) (he/she) (we) (You polite) (they) ich bin du bist er/sie ist wir sind Sie sind sie sind ich habe du hast er/sie hat wir haben Sie haben sie haben Remember most regular past participles are formed by knocking off the –en from the end of the infinitive form of the verb and adding t to the end and ge to the beginning. e.g. spielen = gespielt. Irregular verbs have different past participles and these do not follow the rules. Unfortunately these need to be learnt. If you’re not sure whether a verb is regular or irregular look it up in a dictionary (verb tables are often at the back) or look at an irregular verb table found at the back of a text book. If the verb is not on the irregular verb table assume it’s regular. Don’t forget that most regular verbs use haben in the perfect tense but some irregular verbs (mainly verbs indicating movement) use sein. For your task fill in the gaps in these sentences. In all the sentences you need to include the correct form of haben and sein followed by the past participle. Where necessary I have included the infinitive to help you in brackets: Example: Du hast ein Buch gelesen. – You read a book. 1. Ich ……... Fussball………………………….. (spielen) – I played football. 2. er ……… einen Film……………………………... (sehen) – He watched a film. 3. wir ………………schwimmen …………………….(gehen) – We went swimming. 4. sie …………………Pizza…………………………….(essen) They ate a pizza. – 5. Du …………………in die Stadt …………………. (gehen) – You went to town. 6. sie ……………Limonade …………………(trinken) – She drank some lemonade. 7. ich………………..Rad – I cycled. ………………………. (fahren). 8. er …………seine Hausaufgaben ………………(machen) – He did his homework. Exercise 3 The future tense describes events that are going to happen. You use the verb werden in the present tense + the infinitive (at the end of the sentence) e.g. ich werde Fussball spielen – I am going to play football. werden– to become (present tense) ich du er/sie wir Sie Sie werde wirst wird werden werden werden Fill in the blanks in the following sentences using the correct part of werden and the infinitive . Use the verbs from the previous exercises but remember; you won’t be using any past participles, only infinitives (spielen, sehen, etc). 1. er …………… Fussball………………. – He will play football. 2. Sie …………..einen Film ……………….. – She will watch a film. 3. Wir ………………………. Schwimmen ………………….…. – We will go swimming. 4. Sie………………… Pizza ……………… They will eat a pizza. – 5. wir …………………… in die Stadt………………….– We will go to town. Remember you can use the verb wollen in the same way as werden to mean want as opposed to will. ich will 6. du ……………. Limonade …………………. – You want to drink some lemonade. 7. ich ……………….Rad ………………………. – I want to cycle. 8. er ………………seine Hausaufgaben………………. – He wants to do his homework. du willst er/sie will wir wollen Sie wollen sie wollen 9. sie …………… nach Australien ………………….. – They want to go to Australia. 10. wir……………..am Samstag ins Kino ……………………-We want to go to the cinema on Saturday. Exercise 4 In order to reach the higher grades at GSCE you need to be able to use higher level structures, particularly subordinating conjunctions (connectives like ‘weil’). These alter word order in German and send the verb to the end of the sentence. Re-write the following sentences using the connectives as indicated. For example: ich finde Englisch toll. Ich finde Deutsch besser (obwohl) = ich finde Englisch toll, obwohl ich Deutsch besser finde 1. ich mag Fussball. Es macht Spass (weil) ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 2. ich mache meine Hausaufgaben. Ich esse mein Abendessen (bevor) …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. 3. ich spiele gern am Computer. Es ist kalt (wenn) ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. 4. ich esse gern Schokolade. Es ist ungesund (obgleich) ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Exercise 5 Being able to give your opinion in German will enable you to reach higher GCSE grades. There are many ways of doing this. Some opinion phrases send the verb to the end of the sentence: Ich glaube, dass – I believe that Ich denke, dass – I think that ich bin der meinung, dass – I am of the opinion that Others simply invert the verb (the verb swaps with the subject): Meiner Meinung nach Use the above examples of giving an opinion in the following sentences. You could improve them even further by giving a reason. For example: Deutsch ist gut = Meiner Meinung nach ist Deutsch gut OR ich glaube, dass Deutsch gut ist. 1. Shepton Mallet ist eine schöne Stadt …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 2. Krimis sind interessanter als Trickfilme …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 3. Fussball ist anstrengender als Rugby …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 4. Das deutsche Schulsystem ist besser als das englische System ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Exercise 6 Complete the past GCSE foundation reading paper which follows. Try to complete it at first without a dictionary. When you have completed it, go back through the paper with a dictionary and try to correct your mistakes. Your teacher will then go through the answers with you in class and will be able to tell you what grade you would have achieved. Self Assessment Fill in the boxes based on how you feel you have done in these exercises. Write your target/comment about how you feel you did. I can …….
