May 17, 2015 – As For Me - The church of Christ on New York

“AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE…” continued from front page
commitment. He watched his fellow countrymen vacillate between the
different gods and even no god. He was well aware of the fact that God
gives us the right to make our own choice to follow Him or not. So
Joshua tells them to do whatever they want. It was totally up to them.
But they could not have it both ways. They could not serve God and
gods. They could not serve God one week and forget him the next. Make
your choice, it is yours to make. But as for me and my household, we
will serve the Lord.
Some years ago, I read 2 Peter 2:20 and 21 to a Christian who was
slipping away from the Lord.
“If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled
in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they
were at the beginning. It would have been better for them
not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have
known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred
command that was passed on to them.”
After thinking about that scripture for a moment he said we really don’t
have a choice but to serve the Lord. Of course, he understood that we do
have a choice but he was thinking about the consequences when he made
that statement. It is difficult enough for us to imagine the horrible
consequences for those who never believe in Jesus but then to think of
believers who turn their backs on Jesus and to know that it is going to be
worse for them. The Bible says it would have been better to never
become a Christian if we are going to fall away! By the way, that brother
did re-commit his life to Jesus. Praise be to God that we can come back
to God and He gladly accepts us!
Like Joshua, we need to make a firm commitment to stay with God.
I know things get difficult and situations arise. At times we get so
discouraged that it seems impossible to remain faithful to Jesus. And at
times we get so down on ourselves and just give up because we think we
are never going to make it anyway. But God is always there with open
arms. We just need to say, “as for me, I’m going to serve the Lord!”

NOTES FROM DENNIS
AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE...
"But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose
for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your
forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in
whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will
serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15.
Now and then, someone will come up with one of those
statements that really impress us. For example, Patrick
Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death.” Or John F.
Kennedy’s “Don’t ask what your country can do for you,
asked what you can do for your country.” Statements like that
inspire us and make us realize just how important some
principles are.
A much more important one is Joshua’s statement of

The Scripture and the Reading……..……..….Daniel 3:22-27. Ken Dale
The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the
flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach
and Abednego, and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing
furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement
and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and
threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.” He
said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and
unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing
furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of
the Most High God, come out! Come here!” So Shadrach, Meshach
and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects,
governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that
the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads
singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire
on them.
