by SUZY LAFORGE, Marketing Director
hen Lois Drake started showing clear signs
of dementia at the age of 62, it was no
surprise to her two daughters. She was now
one of four of the five siblings in her family
who had Alzheimer’s disease. The only
sibling who didn’t, a brother, had died at the very
young age of 42 from a heart attack.
A neurologist confirmed that all four siblings carried
the APOE-e4 gene—a gene that increases the risk of
developing the disease, and at an earlier age. The news, while not
totally unexpected, was obviously daunting, particularly for the potential
implications for the next generation. But Lois’ youngest daughter and her
husband, Rachel and Emile Unverzagt, and their two children, Mia and
Landon, with whom she now lives, have taken it all in stride. In fact, they
realize now it’s been a teachable moment for their family.
INSIDE
Lois and her siblings grew up fast after their father died at 52 of a heart
attack. Lois was just five at the time, and her mother and the five kids
moved from St. Louis to Houston to live with her Uncle Leo. He became
a surrogate father to them and they learned the importance of family.
All the children worked from a young age to help support the family,

including Lois, who started at the age of eleven working at a
downtown Houston movie theater.
After marrying and having two daughters, Jennefer and
Rachel, Lois continued to work until retiring ten years
ago at the age of 60. After she retired, she made a pact that
she would take care of each one of her four grandchildren
for their first year of life while her daughters worked. It gave
her the chance to develop a special bond with each one
while helping her daughters out. Like her father, Lois’
husband also died young, at the age of 52, and Lois vowed
after that to take her grandkids to Disney World. It became
a tradition, and every other year or so, she would make
the trek to “the happiest place on earth” with a couple
of her grandkids.
Several years ago, signs started pointing to Lois’
memory issues. She was repeating herself a lot. Then
she totaled two cars, one flipping on a busy freeway.
One day, while babysitting her grandkids, she forgot to
pick them up from school. The final straw came when
she fell while getting on an unsteady step ladder to
change a light bulb out of reach and broke her tibia,
fibula, patella, humerus, and shoulder. She was
diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
and Rachel knew her mother couldn’t be alone anymore
and she moved in with Rachel, Emile and the kids. “She was always so good to me and my children, now it was my turn
to take care of her,” said Rachel.
As her mother’s disease has progressed to Alzheimer’s, Rachel says, “In many ways, it’s like having another child to
keep track of, but this one with more health issues and poorer judgement.” It means more laundry, medications, and
doctor appointments. Her safety is more of a worry. She can’t be home by herself and she has to be watched constantly
when they’re out.
In an auspicious twist, both Rachel and Emile work with seniors who have dementia—Rachel, as an administrator,
and Emile as the Amazing Place Participant Program Director. Lois commutes to work every day with Emile and
attends Amazing Place where she still enjoys playing Bridge and doing art projects. She does not like to miss a day
and is disappointed when Emile takes the day off and she can’t go. “It’s given them a special bond,” according to
Rachel who also says, “Now he can do no wrong.”
For Lois, it’s also been a plus to be with her grandkids. Rachel has noticed that her mom feels less impaired being with
them and that she can still feel like she has a purpose, helping out with them. She is very upfront about her memory
issues and has been known to say when she can’t remember something, “Oh, that stupid brain thing.”
Rachel and Emile are also demonstrating for their kids, Mia, twelve and Landon, eight, how to deal with someone with
dementia. Living with their grandmother, whom they call “Mimi”, has matured them in ways they probably don’t even

realize. They have learned the delicate balance
of being empathic and nurturing, while still
preserving their grandmother’s dignity. Even
though there are times they are acting like
parents to their grandmother, making sure
she is safe, or bringing her something she’s
forgotten, they know how to do it without her
realizing it. They know not to say, “Don’t you
remember...” or “Mimi, you already said that.”
In a reversal of roles, Lois will sometimes bring
an art project home from Amazing Place and
say, “I made this for Mia.” And in a tender
exchange, Mia, will respond, “Oh Mimi, I love
it!” Mia says she loves “snuggling with Mimi on
her bed, having her braid my hair and watch
‘Dancing with the Stars.’”
Landon has also learned to be sensitive to Mimi
and instinctively will go to reach for her hand
in crowded places. When she forgets to get
her drink, Landon will get it. Landon says he
appreciates her going to his soccer games and
bragging about him when he plays well.

and youngest sister, Carol,
L to R, Lois with her oldest sister, Janet,
all of whom have Alzheimer’s.
Last spring, Rachel decided to take her mother with
her kids on a trip back to her mother’s favorite place, Disney World, to celebrate her seventieth birthday. Rachel
realized the poignancy of it as now she was taking her mom to the place she had always taken the grandkids. And,
that it was probably the last time she could take her mother. While it required a lot of special arrangements with
the airlines and the parks to accommodate her mother and make sure she didn’t get lost, Rachel said, “It was
worth every moment to see her never stop smiling.” The kids understood the real reason they were there was for
Mimi, so when she wanted to wait in a long line for pictures with Mickey, they didn’t complain.
Rachel and Emile are asked all the time how they do it—working in the field of dementia care, caring for a
mother/mother-in-law with dementia, and raising their two children. Rachel acknowledges, it is a full plate.
This past fall, she had her own health scare and wake-up call—a heart attack. And, the obvious elephant in the
living room, that she, too, could inherit the disease, hasn’t gotten past either of them. While most would obsess
about it, Rachel is working on things she can control in her lifestyle—especially diet and exercise.
Neither of them say they regret this time caring for Lois, and, in the back of their minds, they realize there is
another benefit they hadn’t predicted. They are passing down the importance of taking care of family, something
Lois learned early on from her mother and Uncle Leo.
This story is excerpted from the new book,“Remembering What Matters: Stories from Amazing Place that Reveal the Unexpected Lessons of
Dementia”, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of Amazing Place, to be released in September, 2016.

AMAZING PLACE 2015 Annual Report
As a ministry built on relationships, we recognize that our reach goes beyond serving
those with dementia and their families in our beautiful day center. Our mission
also connects us to those in Houston who need education, resources, training or
information about dementia and how it impacts those they care for and love. In
2015, our service to the 2,600 individuals in the community focused on several
initiatives including educational Brain Health Matters presentations, clinical
training for nursing/medical students, professional peer educations, counseling
and support to families in the community, and supportive classes and seminars.
Recently I was interviewed by The National Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource
Center as they prepare a paper and case studies about how faith–based organizations
are serving those with dementia in their communities. Our founder, Rev. Dean
Robinson, recognized this over 20 years ago – that faith communities can play a vital
role in supporting the dramatic rise of adults facing this devastating and debilitating
diagnosis.
As we celebrate this significant anniversary, we must express deep gratitude to the many churches in our community
which have governed and supported Amazing Place. Their extraordinary spiritual leaders, generous outreach support,
dedicated and passionate volunteers, and powerful prayers have held up this mission and made it the significant,
growing resource it is today.
In 2016, we have implemented a new governance structure, which includes the launch of a Council of Congregations,
to further strengthen the bridge between Amazing Place and the congregations in our community. Together, as a
community of faith, we will continue to meet the challenge and make a difference in the lives of families dealing with
this difficult journey – both within our state-of-the-art day center, and throughout our great city.
Celebrating our blessings,
Tracey Brown, Executive Director

FAITHFUL Donors
o ease the financial burdens of our caregiving families, Amazing Place strives to keep the daily rate reasonable.
This daily rate does not cover the actual daily operating cost. Annually, our fundraising efforts bridge this difference
between the total amount paid by caregiving families and actual operating expenses. While every effort has been
made to ensure the accuracy of this list and recognize donors and their intentions accordingly, we acknowledge
and apologize that errors or omissions sometimes occur. We are truly grateful for all of the generous donors
who gave to Amazing Place in 2015. Every gift has been a blessing.
