Dear Parents / Caregivers
We had wonderful weather last week for the school picnic. It was a success and everyone had a
great time enjoying the facilities at the Wainuiomata Pool.
The Upstream Art Trial was amazing in Central Park. Four of the sculptures from our Kiwi syndicate
children are now in our school front garden if you missed the exhibition.
The testing has been completed and now there is lots of preparation being done for upcoming
events. Moa Syndicate are visiting the Island Bay Marae on the 17 March They will sleep over and
prepare the hangi for the Takahe Syndicate the next day. The Takahe will be welcomed with a
formal powhiri. Students in Room 10 are organising this.
Our school athletics day is Friday 20 March, at the Newtown Athletics Stadium, from 9.30am to
2.30pm. (Postponement Friday 27 March). Years 4 to 8 will be competing in a variety of events.
The Tui Syndicate will be running their own separate athletics event alongside the rest of the
school. Buses will leave from school at around 9am. A decision will be made by 3pm on Thursday
if the weather looks doubtful and advised via the school phone line and our website.
Children will need to be equipped for the day with a good sized packed lunch, drink, suitable
clothing and footwear, sunhat, sun block and a warm jacket. Children must wear their school
sunhat on athletics day.
School athletics is a great day and we encourage you to come along to support your child. The
first three, Year 4 to 8 students in each event (except for the sack race, standing jump and softball
throw), will go forward to represent Brooklyn School at the Central Zone Athletics in Term 4. Year
3’s, do not compete at the Central Zones. The days programme is on the last page of this
newsletter.
Fundraising – Please return the yellow fundraising form as soon as possible. Planning for upcoming
events will be underway soon. Thank you if your form has been returned.
School Directory - is going to be printed this week and distributed to the eldest or only child next
Wednesday. There are still some forms to be returned and these family contact details will be
omitted from the directory. (Along with those that have already advised us)
This week we give a warm Brooklyn welcome to the families of these students who have recently
started at Brooklyn School: New Entrants Yael Mizrahi & Laila Upton, Alex Li Year 7, Keira Partington

There was a water slide and you could dive into the

Board of Trustees Update March 2015
Welcome back to school and a special welcome to our new children and families.
The “Kaka Project: Brooklyn Area Community Planning” group are gathering further feedback to help
develop a plan for the wider Brooklyn Area, some of which will contribute to Wellington City Council’s Long
Term Plan in May. We would like a shared school and community resource in central Brooklyn (i.e. Harrison
St or very nearby) which would include a gymnasium/hall. We would like to put our $630,000 Special
Property Grant (which can’t be used for classrooms) into building a gymnasium/hall. Please have your say:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KakaProject
We have reviewed and updated our Charter which sets out the Board’s strategic leadership expectations for
the next 3-5 years. It includes specific targets for Maths, Reading and Writing for 2015. Once approved by
the Ministry of Education, it will be on our Brooklyn School website for viewing.
Rooms 11 and 12 have new “Modern Learning Environment” furniture. The teachers and students are
really enjoying their new environment for learning. Pop in and have a look.
It’s great to see our solar panels, partially funded by Genesis energy and the Wellington City Council, up on
the Moa block roof. They are now generating some of our electricity requirements and will be used in our
learning.
Over the holidays we replaced the matting under the Tui Playground with much safer astro turf. Remedial
work on the netball courts and crib wall was also completed.
We have again set the requested donation at $220 per child for this year. The money received enables us
to provide equipment and resources which are not funded by the Government but which we believe are
vital to providing the level of education that you expect from our school. Your donation will be used to fund
the library (including staffing) along with our additional investment in staffing to support all children. Thank
you so much for supporting our school in this way.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact any of us via the school office.
Our next meeting is scheduled for 7.00 pm Tuesday 24 March, in the staff room.
Board of Trustees: Mary-Ann Butterfield (Chairperson), Liz Rhodes (Principal), David Lee, Rex Moller,
Matthew Murfitt, Nigel Corry and Glen Burdon (Teacher Representative).
