Build Background
Help children use their knowledge of lions. Build interest by asking questions such as the
following: Have you ever seen a lion in a zoo or on TV? Where was the lion? What was it
doing? Read the title and talk about the cover photograph. Tell children that this book will
give information about a lion that lives in nature.
Introduce the Text
Guide children through the text, helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text
successfully. Here are some suggestions:
Page 2: Explain that children will read about different things the lion can do.
Suggested language: Turn to page 2. What is the lion doing? The author says: The
lion can eat. Where is the lion? How can you tell the lion in this book is a real lion?
This lion lives in the wild.
Page 3: Turn to page 3. What does this photo show that the lion can do? The
sentence says: He can drink. Say He. The word He is a short word that begins with
the letter H. It begins with an uppercase H because it is at the beginning of the
sentence.
Page 5: What does this photo show that the lion can do? He can play with the baby
lion. You can tell the baby lion feels safe on the big lion’s back!
Page 6: What is the lion doing in this photo? Yes, he can sleep. What do you think
would happen if I woke up the lion? The last two lines say: Can I wake him up? No!
Say the word No. Now find it on the page.
Now turn back to the beginning of the book and read about all the things the lion
can do.
Words to Know
Have children turn to the Words to Know at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and
then together. Explain any unknown words. Tell children to look for these words as they read.

Concepts of Print
Help children hear and identify long (eat, play, sleep) and short (can, drink, run) vowel
sounds in words and the letters that represent them.
Phonemic Awareness and Word Work
Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:
• Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have
children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound, and keep their
hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words, emphasizing
the beginning consonant sound, for example: lion and can; lion and like; run and roll,
run and play, sleep and sun, sleep and drink.
• Tracing Letters Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children
choose a letter, say the name, and trace the letter.
• Build Words Have children make more words that have the same vowel sound as
play (day, clay, hay, lay, may, pay, say, stay, tray, way). Write the words in a list on the
board or on a large sheet of paper. Read the list aloud together.

Building Vocabulary
Action Words
Build on the action words in The Lion.
Suggested language: Let’s think about all the things the lion can do. What else do you
think a lion can do? As children suggest actions, write their words and sentences on the
board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with the words: The lion can.
(Possible suggestions: hunt, walk, yawn, scratch, roar, climb)
After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each
word. Look at all the things a lion can do!
Writing Prompt
Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the
writing prompt on page 6.
Draw a picture of one thing a lion can do to have fun.
