the Chamber Volume XXXIV No. 10 Bell Tower Building • Cumberland, MD 21502 October 2016 Executive Director Fall is here and temperatures are falling, albeit ever so slowly. With fall comes a busy October as always at the Chamber with events ranging from networking/marketing to legislative/political to member recognition. On the networking front, the October “Chamber After Hours” will be held on the 19th and hosted by Horizon Goodwill Industries with Network & Win now up to the highest level it’s been in over five years. The last and only time the cash pot was this high was in September of 2011 when we gave away $3,500! You have to be there to win, so don’t miss it. Thank you to ACRE (Allegany Commercial Real Estate) Coworking for hosting the September “After Hours”. The over 170 in attendance enjoyed a beautiful summer evening of great hospitality and networking. In addition, Tuesday, October 18th is prime time to showcase Allegany County Chamber of Commerce members to the public. Chamber Expo 2016: “GAME ON!” is rolling out the fun at the Allegany College of Maryland Gymnasium from 11:30 am to 5:00 pm. A variety of member businesses, restaurants and non-profit organizations will be showcasing their latest products and services. With a sports and wellness theme vendors will have the opportunity to use their imagination to decorate their booth. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded for the best decorated booths and everyone attending can vote for their favorite. There will be no shortage of fun and prize drawings for all who attend. Register at the event for a chance to win a Fitbit Blaze courtesy of Health Matters Urgent Care. Expo 2016 is proudly sponsored by U.S. Cellular and is once again an event you don’t want to miss. Only a few vendor opportunities remain available so reserve your booth space today. The Expo is free to attend and open to the public. The November 8th general election is quickly approaching. While many are growing weary of the political rhetoric and grandstanding on the national level, the fact that our right to vote is one of the most precious rights we have in our country can not be diminished. In an effort to help voters make informed election decisions, the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce will again be making local candidate forums available to the public. Starting in early October the Chamber will have candidate forums for Cumberland City Council and the Allegany County Board of Education available for viewing on its website, www.alleganycounty chamber.com, and its Facebook page. The forums were recorded in the studios of WFWM Radio at Frostburg State University with video provided by Allegany College of Maryland. The forums will also be made available to all local media Chamber members. In this information age, the Chamber strongly encourages voters to listen directly to what our candidates have to say and take advantage of all the opportunities to do so throughout the community. If you have an opinion, now is the time to make it count. Early voting begins on October 27th. Get out there and vote. The Chamber’s 29th Annual Outstanding Business Recognition Dinner will be held on Tuesday, October 25th at the Frostburg State University Lane Center. The awardees are CBIZ, Business of the Year, Evergreen Heritage Center Foundation, Entrepreneurial Spirit, and Sean L. McCagh, MD, Community Service. The 2016 Western Maryland Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) Outstanding Young Professional, Jeremy G. Irons, will also be recognized at the dinner. Congratulations to all the award winners! For more information and to purchase tickets, contact the Chamber at 301-722-2820. This annual recognition is a reminder that there are indeed great people and happenings in our community. The organization has been a strong partner of development and remains an advocate representing blue collar working class men and women since its inception. This organization supports continued growth to the region and positive partnerships with the business community. Ironworkers Local 568 represents a special group of workers maintaining the highest standard of professionalism and safety, ensuring all workers are treated fair and remain safe. In turn, they live by the creed of “a fair days work for a fair days pay.” Their training remains their largest asset and their contractors realize the value of a trained workforce to ensure projects are completed effectively and come in on time and under budget. This training provides college credits towards a Construction Management degree or an Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Technology. An important aspect to their trade and a noteworthy mention includes funding of these programs. All training, retirement, and health and welfare are provided by employer contributions and are mutually agreed to through the collective bargaining process between the union and the employers. This funding provides a highly valuable resource without burden to the taxpayer or the general public. They rely on their reputation and expertise to provide a self motivating system under which the hardworking men and women of the industry thrive. Much like others in the community, you will find their members to be a valuable resource providing volunteer based support including coaches to our kids, volunteers to our community and mentors to those wishing to pursue a career in the industry. Some of the most recent sizable projects that display the work of Ironworkers include I68 Bridges, Western MD Hospital, AES Power Station, Wind Turbines, Care First and numerous upgrades to viable infrastructures within the region, such as water treatment plants, dams and replacement or repair of decaying bridges. They are always looking to bring in new members and welcome applicants looking for a career in the trade. Applications can be completed onsite on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between the hours of 9-11am. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, high school transcripts, and a valid I.D.
