Distances and times are one-way. All hiking trails are moderate to strenuous. SUMMIT TO BASE AREA (CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN TO SILVER CREEK TRAIL) 4.8 miles, 3 hrs. Ride the Mt. Rainier Gondola to the summit, walk the service road towards the Green Valley chairlift, take a sharp left just before the chairlift on the switchback heading south below the gondola. The Crystal Mountain trail starts below Powder Bowl. Meander through ski runs, alpine lakes and an old mining area called Jim Town. One you reach Henskin Lake, you will continue onto the Silver Creek trail back to the base area. BASE AREA TO HENSKIN LAKE Ranger Walks Join a Forest Service Ranger on an interpretive walk Thursday - Sunday from the top of the gondola at 11am, 1pm & 2:30pm. Learn about local flora and fauna, human history and the geologic processes which have shaped this unique alpine landscape. Tours are complimentary and open to everyone. Hiking Tips Bikers Yield To Hikers and Horses. Hikers Yield To Horses. Hikers Traveling Downhill Yield To Hikers Traveling Uphill. • When meeting a horse: get off the trail on the downhill side. Quietly greet the rider and ask if you are ok where you are. Stand quietly while the horses pass. 2.3 miles, 1.5 hrs. From the base area head up the slope east of the Mountain Shop into the trees, once you reach the service road take the first right to connect with the Silver Creek Trail (3/4 of the way up Gold Hills). Once you cross the slope you’ll pass an old mine shaft and waterfall. Continue through the forest to Jim Town junction and head right to Henskin Lake. • Stay on the Trail. Do not cut switchbacks or take shortcuts. SUMMIT TO BASE AREA (GREEN VALLEY TRAIL TO KELLY’S GAP ROAD) • Respect the natural environment and carry out all of your trash, even biodegradable items such as banana peels. It is not good for animals to eat non-native plants/foods and who wants to look at your old banana peel while it ever-so-slowly decomposes? If you packed it in, pack it out. 3.3 miles, 2 hrs. Starting from the top of Green Valley chairlift along the summit ridge, wind your way down the trail to the bottom of the lift. Continue down Kelly’s Gap road or return to the summit to ride the gondola to the base. SUMMIT TO BASE OF NORTHWAY 6 miles, 3.5 hrs. Ride the Mt. Rainier Gondola to the summit, walk the service road towards the Green Valley chair and continue down the road towards the Northway chairlift. Stay to the left towards Morning Glory Bowl, follow trail down to Sand Flats Horse Camp. Either drop a vehicle at Sand Flats (with Forest Permit) or walk an additional 2 miles up the Crystal Mountain Blvd. to return to the base area. BULLION BASIN TRAIL 1.5 miles, 1.5 hrs. From the base area head up the slope east of the Mountain Shop to reach the service road. Follow the service road to the top switchback where the trail begins. Continue on to the Pacific Crest Trail for great views of the resort and Mt. Rainier. Summit Ridge Walks Once at the top of the gondola, you may want to venture out along one of the ridge-lines for more sprawling views. Simply walk down the ridge towards the top of the Green Valley Chairlift and continue down the service road toward the Northway Charlift or further out to Morning Glory Bowl. Another option from the top of the Green Valley chairlift is to head towards Powder Bowl and the Crystal Mountain Trail for a short scenic walk. Remember that it is uphill on the way back and plan to leave enough time to catch the last gondola ride down. Take Only Pictures. Leave Only Footprints. • A pretty rock or a bunch of flowers deserve to remain where they are. The only souvenirs a hiker should come home with are from the Mountain or Summit Shops, photographs and happy memories — and maybe an improved fitness level! Always Bring Several Layers of Clothing. • When it’s in the 80s at the base of a mountain the temperature up top, where it’s several thousand feet higher, will be cooler. On the rare occasions, it can even snow at the summit. If you start out in a t-shirt, toss a long-sleeved shirt, a fleece and spare socks in a daypack. Lightweight rain gear is handy if it starts raining. Wear Shoes with Good Grip and Ankle Support. • Most trails are a mix of rock and dirt. Over the ankle hiking boots may help save you from twisted ankles on rough trails, where shale or rocks stud the dirt to keep the paths from eroding. Bring Bug Repellent & Sunscreen. • Mosquitoes and other insects swarm near water sources and elsewhere across the mountain. Use a Walking Stick. • Complimentary ski poles are available at the base and top gondola terminals. Please return once you are done with your hike. Hiking poles are available for purchase at the Mountain Shop. Bring Food and Water. • You get dehydrated faster at higher altitude, so bring lots of water. Don’t forget energy bars or other food that gives you the power to keep hiking. Do Not Feed Wild Animals. • It is important that you do not approach wildlife or feed them for your safety and theirs.
