Blast Off with a Brilliant Beginning

Blast Off with a
Brilliant Beginning!
One way to make your writing more interesting and
entertaining is by starting off with a great, attention grabbing
beginning! Here are some techniques authors use to begin their work.
1.
Truism: Reflect a truth about people, life, or the world.
Ask: What is a universal truth?
Example – Change is a constant certainty.
2.
ACTION: Give a first-hand account of an action as though it is happening now.
Ask: What exciting event are you witnessing?
Example – Hundreds of people pelted each other with their fliers; only a few souls
braved crossing the path of the raging protestors.
3.
DIALOGUE: Repeat what someone has said or two people have discussed.
Ask: What might you say or exclaim?
Example – To make fractions easy, Ms. Moore often used pizza analogies like 2/4
or 1/2 is "two out of four pieces" or "one out of two pieces”.
4.
A Thought-provoking statement or QUESTION:
State a unique perspective, or raise a question.
Ask: What is an innovative idea or question?
Example – Could insects have personality like humans?
5.
A SOUND: Grab the reader’s attention through the use of a sound.
Ask: What might you hear?
Example – BOOM! Flinching, I was caught by surprise from the deafening drum.
