2010 Benevilla Annual Report

The Story of Benevilla:
A Family Album
2010 Annual Report
From the President and Board Chair
Michelle Dionisio
Benevilla
President and CEO
John Bridgford
Benevilla
2010 Board Chair
Dear Friends,
It has been an exciting year for Benevilla
as we continue to balance continuity and
change in meeting the needs of a dynamic
community.
Originally founded to provide support
services to help the older adults of the
Sun Cities to maintain their dignity and
remain independent, Benevilla embraced
the explosive growth of population in the
Northwest Valley by widening its mission.
That wider focus allows the organization
to offer a diverse assortment of programs
designed to bring together older adults,
children and families and to find new ways
to enhance the experience of life for people
of all ages.
This annual report is a “family album”
which celebrates the evolution of an
organization that was founded by the
community for the community nearly 30
years ago and which continues to respond
to community needs with agility available
only at the local level.
The impact of a changing community
can be seen in every corner of Benevilla.
Just look at the diversity reflected in the
faces of even a handful of our nearly 700
volunteers! From 12-year old Diego to
92-year old Wanda, an amazing variety
of people are contributing their talents,
energy and enthusiasm to cultivating a
caring community.
Benevilla continually strives to support
a changing community with additions and
modifications to existing programs while
remaining steadfast in support of our
historical roots.
Our dedication to the core services for
older adults is unwavering and we answer
that need with six adult day programs,
caregiver support groups, information
and referral services and by coordinating
the efforts of more than 695 volunteers in
helping their neighbors with the necessary
tasks of daily living. We expanded our
efforts in 2010 with the introduction of the
only home-delivered meals program serving
Surprise.
Our change is reflected in newer
programs designed for the growing needs
of families in the Northwest Valley including
Wirtzie’s Child Development Center, Art’s
Center for All Ages Intergenerational
Program, the Benevilla Family Resource
Center and providing an outlet for local
musicians and artists at Birt’s Bistro &
Bookstore. Benevilla is also proud to be
a part of collaborative efforts bringing a
community garden and public art to the
original town site of Surprise.
One of the biggest decisions balancing
change and continuity was the adoption of
a new name.
Choosing a new name is never an
easy process, especially while honoring
three decades of history and hundreds of
passionate volunteers, donors, participants
and partners. Dozens of interviews with
those stakeholders revealed a common
theme that Benevilla acts as a surrogate
family or as support in the ups and downs
of life.
So “Benevilla” was born. With “bene”
the root of good and “villa” as home, the
word connotes “good home”. Our tag
line “Cultivating Caring Communities” speaks to
our commitment to growing with the community
we serve. The new logo is a nod to the past and an
exciting vision of the future. Part sun, part view of
the circle of caring people from above with faces
turned up, arms open and hearts wide, we hope that
together, the new name, tag line and logo convey
the warmth and support the agency is proud to have
offered for almost thirty years.
Benevilla: a celebration of the past and a new
name for a new future.
Thank you for everything you do to make that
possible,

Benevilla Adult Day Programs
Benevilla’s Adult Day Programs, including Mary’s Place and Lucy
Anne’s Place, help families caring for someone with a chronic
physical condition, dementia-related illness or a developmental
disability.
Programs are available to address particular concerns including the
needs of adults who have Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related
diseases, those who need physical therapy or who would benefit
from restorative care and adults with developmental disabilities.
All six of our Adult Day Programs are accredited through CARF
(Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), exceed
the expectations of the Department of Health Services and maintain best
practices in the field of adult day services.
Charlotte fell head over heels in love with James Marsh in
a small-town Alabama high school when she was 17 and
he was 19. Despite her family’s threat to disown her, she
married him and has never looked back.
Forty-eight years later, that love drives everything
Charlotte does every moment of the day as caregiver
for James, who has late-stage dementia complicated by
damage from a recent stroke.
Like many caregivers, Charlotte was certain that she could
go it alone. Charlotte reluctantly agreed to try a Benevilla
Adult Day Program but spent the first day hidden in
the Mary’s Place nurse’s office, alert for the first sign of
distress in James. It never surfaced.
Now, Charlotte is a passionate evangelist for the program
and trumpets how caring and involved the staff is with
the participants. James calls the program his “school”
and wants to know why he can’t attend on Saturday and
Sunday as well as on weekdays.
Charlotte sums it up with “my goal is to make sure James
always knows he’s safe and loved. The people at Mary’s
Place are invaluable in helping me meet that goal. It’s so
much better than going through this alone.”
Helping Partners Program
Kevin’s energy, intelligence and forceful personality shine through the firm handshake
and ready smile with which he greets everyone.
Kevin has been with the Helping Partners Program for 13 years and is the kind of active
adult the program excels at helping by engaging and challenging each to reach the
maximum amount of independence possible in their situation. Program staff practice
person-centered care and work with each individual to develop and regularly update
goals for social, physical and cognitive growth.
In Kevin’s case, the key was finding a positive channel for his inexhaustible energy and
restless mind. Kevin was assigned certain responsibilities within the Center and also
volunteers in the community including working at a local food bank, thrift store and
animal shelter. Kevin also loves participating in the HPP choir and is very excited about
the new repertoire the choir is learning from “The Sound of Music”. Each day, Kevin
can choose from a wide variety of activities including outings in the community, time to learn math and money skills,
practice reading, explore science, have fun cooking or enjoy physical activity and exercise.
Supervisor Kamisha Gooch credits finding the right mix of challenge and fun for building Kevin’s self-esteem. Kevin’s
mother, Karen, agrees that the program has made an invaluable difference in Kevin’s life. As she puts it, “Kevin can
be a handful, but the Helping Partners Program has helped him build more friendships and enjoy more hobbies and
activities than I ever thought possible. It has been wonderful!”
Home Services
Benevilla’s Volunteer Home Services
matches caring volunteers with older
adults who need help with shopping,
transportation, financial affairs, minor
household repairs or who need a
friendly visitor or phone pal.
Services are provided at no charge to
individuals with limited resources.
Evelyn is a petite, soft-spoken woman who
exemplifies grace and warmth even when
discussing the challenges she and her husband,
Ted, face. Their 2005 marriage was a late-life
chance at love for two people who met in their
teens but had gone their separate ways before
reuniting.
Ted’s diagnosis of pernicious anemia led to a set
of secondary problems and Evelyn’s own cascade of health concerns,
including a heart condition, diabetes, arthritis and macular degeneration,
made it increasingly impossible to handle many of the day-to-day tasks
of living and the couple began to consider the painful option of leaving
their home.
A concerned pastor recommended Benevilla, whose social services staff
was able to connect Evelyn with much-needed resources, giving both
Evelyn and Ted reassurance and peace of mind.
Benevilla volunteers now provide regular trips to the many doctor’s
appointments the couple have each month, pick up and deliver groceries,
help with household tasks like balancing the checkbook and writing
correspondence, and have provided invaluable handyman help to
maintain their home when needed.
Home Delivered Meals
The Benevilla Home Delivered Meals program
began service in October 2010.
Volunteers deliver nutritious, wholesome
midday meals to homebound adults who may
have difficulty getting proper nutrition—often
because of mobility or health issues. Volunteers
also provide a social support system of resources
and information about Benevilla services and
other community organizations in order to better
respond to their individual needs.
Start-up funds for this program were provided
through a generous grant from BHHS Legacy
Foundation and Thunderbird Charities.

Caregiver Support Groups
Over 40% of caregivers rate their emotional stress as high or very high and
one third of caregivers have symptoms of depression. Benevilla support
groups provide opportunities for caregivers to learn techniques in providing
care for their loved one while receiving encouragement from other group
members.
Groups are tailored to help those caring for someone with dementia-related
diseases, other chronic illnesses, parents of adults with developmental
disabilities and individuals living with grief and bereavement.
In 2010, Benevilla tested a new caregiver support group format for those in
the early stages of dementia and offered concurrent groups designed to help
the newly diagnosed with coping strategies and information while a different
group helped caregivers with support and preparation.
In 2010, Benevilla’s professional
staff of social workers responded
to over 550 telephone calls each
month.
Benevilla’s Information & Referral
specialists maintain a constantly
updated database of local
resources to help individuals
and families identify, understand
and effectively use community
services.
This “one-stop-shop” can either
provide services directly from
Benevilla or make appropriate
referrals from our extensive
information base of over 1,000
providers and agencies.
Thank you for being there for
caregivers. I learned so much
in your support group and
have passed information on
to others I know who care for
people with dementia. I’m so
grateful to have your group and
newsletters for encouragement,
communication and education.
You are a true blessing!

Wirtzie’s Child Development Center
The Wirtzie’s goal is to provide a community where relationships are built
and everyone contributes and belongs.
We embrace the individualities of our children and their families and
our staff knows that out of difference come strength, learning and
understanding. Each child who comes to Wirtzie’s has unique mental,
physical and social characteristics.
Because each child is unique, the Wirtzie’s curriculum is designed to find
the optimal balance of structure and freedom for a child’s particular needs.
Our programs are designed to provide age-appropriate, child-directed
activities that will inspire children to learn and discover through play and
the spark of their own natural curiosity.
A Benevilla Program
Family Resource Center
The Benevilla Family Resource Center is
funded by a grant from First Things First and
works to strengthen families with children
5 years and under. The Center offers
free parenting classes, family events, a
lending library of books and videos, links to
community resources and information and
distributes thousands of pre-kindergarten
school readiness kits each year to help set
children up for success in school.
To best serve the local community, services
and materials are made available in both
English and Spanish.
Art’s Center for All Ages
A dedicated space between Lucy Anne’s Place and Wirtzie’s
provides structured opportunities where children and older
generations come together to grow, learn about themselves
and others and form relationships that can be life changing.
The Center features a sensory garden, reading room and
performance stage.
Birt’s Bistro & Bookstore
Birt’s Bistro & Bookstore is part cafe, part bookstore, part
arts gallery, part music venue, but it’s ALL community
gathering space.
From the uniquely modern, airy architecture to the casual
light fare offered on the menu, the space encourages
lingering and conversation for families in the Northwest
Valley.
Patrons can browse thousands of gently used books,
linger over work by local artisans or enjoy live, local
music.
Birt’s also caters events large and small.
You may have heard Birt’s referred to as
a “social enterprise”, but what does that
mean?
A social enterprise is a business or service
with social objectives whose surpluses are
principally reinvested for that social purpose
in the community.
What does that mean for you? Everything
you purchase helps support Benevilla.
Chez Nous Center & Cafe
After losing her husband 12
years ago, Wanda S. felt lost
and did not know how to
begin building a new life. A
friend suggested volunteering at Benevilla (at the time Interfaith Community Care),
and as Wanda puts it, “I went. I made friends. And I
felt so welcome from that very first day that I stayed.”
When Chez Nous opened in 2004, Wanda was an eager
volunteer at the new social center and café. In fact, she
was part of the group who selected the name for the
new gathering spot.
Since then, Wanda has served a multitude of meals,
washed a mountain of dishes and offered a smile and
a greeting to everyone she encounters. Now a vibrant
92 years old, she frankly admits, “If I hadn’t found
Chez Nous when I was 80, I probably wouldn’t be here
today.”
Whenever anyone mentions to her that they don’t
know anyone or are lonely, she tells them to come to
Chez Nous and make friends. “It’s such a warm place!
People come in for a class, a cup of coffee or a sandwich
and they find so much more. There’s lots of hugging
and everyone always remembers to ask about you and
your family.”
With her only son splitting his time between Arizona
and the Midwest, Wanda says “Chez Nous is both my
family and my home away from home. If I didn’t have
Chez Nous to go to, I don’t know where I’d go.”
Chez Nous (pronounced “shay new”) is a
neighborhood social center and cafe in the
heart of Sun City West which provides the
community a place to forge a new friendship,
learn a new hobby, or to relax over a light
meal or specialty coffee.
