Zion Park Manor News Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! November/December 2013 Zion Park Manor 5939-180th St. Surrey, BC V3S 4L2 Christmas 2013 Newsletter September /October in Review Lord Tweedsmuir Students!!! The Lord Tweedsmuir students have started in full swing this year and are an amazing group! They have been coming on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays after school, visiting and helping out with a variety of programs- doing nailcare, playing active games, cards and table games. In fact, the residents were talking about a new game the students taught them- “Sister-in-law” and “Cheat”! We sure enjoy it when they come to spend time and visit with us at the Manor. They are a real joy to have around !! Concerts in Care We were graced by one of Canada’s most celebrated String Ensembles, Borealis String Quartet on Friday, Sept. 9 at 1:30 PM. The program contained mainly music by Beethoven and Mendelsohn. Beautiful! This concert was sponsored by the Vancouver Foundation, BMO Financial Group, the Province of BC and Odlum Brown. Patricia Shih, violin Yuel Yawney, violin Nikita Pogrebnoy, viola Bo Peng, cello Bus Drives What amazing weather we have had this fall! It was so beautiful that we got out often for country drives in the Manor Bus to enjoy the autumn colours. On the last bus drive of October we even stopped by and picked up the pumpkins for carving jack-o-lanterns. Harvesting Grapes The weather was perfect, bright blue sky, for our grape harvesting day! Some of the students were outside picking the grapes and a group of students and residents were in the solarium, sorting them out in preparation for making juice. Everyone enjoyed some delicious homemade grape juice on the very next day! We have frozen more juice and will be able to enjoy it at future special events. Thank you to all the hard workers! Delicious! Lord Tweedsmuir Students picking grapes. Residents, students and family members sorting bins and bins of grapes for grape juice. Serious business- this grape sorting!! Many Hands make light work! A couple hours of work and before we knew it, the job was done! Q: What did the green grape say to the purple grape? A: Breathe! Breathe! Q: Why aren't grapes ever lonely? A: Because they come in bunches! Q: What did the grape say when he got stepped on? A: He let out a little wine. Japenese Students Visit Approximately 15 high school students from a city close to Tokyo, Japan came to visit us as part of their one-week trip to experience Canadian culture. They spent the morning with us- receiving a brief overview of health care and seniors’ care in BC, a tour of our facility and then spending some time visiting with residents. They sang their school song for us, showed residents how to make a variety of origami shapes (traditional Japanese paper folding art) and then wrote the residents names in Japanese calligraphy. It was a very interesting cultural experience. Residents were working hard with students to learn the art of origami! Finished result- a box! Others made hearts, flowers, birds, and stars. What a nice visit! Halloween Fun! We had some fun days around Halloween this year! –carving pumpkins, a BIG Halloween Costume Party with a photo booth, guessing games and goodies, Halloween games and lots and lots of Halloween treats! We also had little visitors dressed up from the Cloverdale Christian preschool and kindergarten next door. They were the cutest!! Zion residents and Lord Tweedsmuir students carving pumpkins for Halloween !! The end result was four very unique jack-o-lantern creations to display in the Manor!!! Even Molly, Christine’s dog, had a costume on! Little Bo Peep! Happy winners of the Candy Jar Guessing Games! Fun photos in the photo booth!! Q: Why did the vampires cancel the baseball game? A: Because they couldn’t find their bats. Q: What did the mummy say to the detective? A: Let’s wrap this case up. Q: What do you get if you cross a snowman with a vampire? A: Frostbite. Q: Why didn’t the skeleton go to the Halloween party? A: Because he had no-body to go with. Q: What do ghosts serve for dessert? A: I scream!
