Unit 2: Introduction to Poetry

Choose your homework from the menu below:
The Peri-ometer suggests the difficulty or challenge the
homework may offer. Every unit you should attempt
at least one ‘EXTRA HOT’ task!
1. Write your own ballad recounting a
story that is currently in the news.
Ensure you include the features of the
ballad form in your piece. (Aim for at
least 4 stanzas)
2. Research Anglo-Saxon English and
Kennings. Write at least 3 Kennings that
capture Anglo-Saxon history.
3. Write an article for your local
newspaper that argues why your
favourite poem should be included in an
anthology entitled ‘The ten greatest
poems of all time’. (Minimum 1 A4 page)
4. Imagine you are a character or the
speaker in one of your poems. Write a
letter to an imagined recipient explaining
your thoughts and feelings about the
events or themes of the poem.
(Minimum 1 A4 page)
5. Create a ‘Guide to writing poetry’ or a
‘poetry recipe book’. (Minimum 1 A4
page)
6. Summarise the sonnet you studied
today into no more than five tweets
(Extra challenge: use rhyme or rhyming
couplets) #poetryisawesome.
7. Write a poem based on the book that
you are currently reading. Try to emulate
one of the poetic forms that you have
studied in class.
8. Research a contemporary LIVING
poet and write an obituary for them.
How will they be remembered?
(Minimum three quarters of an A4 pagehandwritten!)
9. Write 15 challenging quiz questions
based on your study of poetry this week.
10. Write a story based on one of the
poems that you have studied in class.
Ensure that you include the necessary
ingredients of a narrative! (Minimum 2
A4 pages)
11. Create a social media profile for a
poet from the 1800s.
12. Create a collage of images and
quotes that capture the themes of a
poem of your choice. (1 A4 page)
