Safety Month
By Dennis Goebel, Vice President, Liberty
Mutual Insurance Company
National Safety Month focuses on preventative
measures that employees can take to maintain
an accident-free workplace. In keeping with
that mission, here are some best practices
provided by Liberty Mutual that you can
incorporate into your daily routine to ensure
the safety of you and your colleagues.
Preventing Slips and Falls
Wear footwear with low heels and non-slip
soles. Keep shoelaces tied.
Don’t carry items that you can’t see over or
around, especially on stairs.
Clean up spills promptly.
A light heart
lives long.
William
Shakespeare
Keep equipment, cables, boxes, and trash
out of hallways and stairways.
Notify maintenance about torn carpets and
cracked or missing tiles.
Ask maintenance to keep outdoor walkways
and lobby entrances free of water, ice, snow,
mud, and wet leaves. (continued below)
Ergonomics
Adjust your chair’s height so that your wrists and arms are in a straight line and relaxed when you type
on your keyboard or manipulate your mouse.
Take 30-second breaks regularly to readjust your sitting position or stretch your back and limbs.
Position your computer monitor at or below eye level and at arm’s length. Adjust natural and artificial
lighting to minimize glare and reduce eye strain.
Heavy Lifting
Never lift beyond your strength. Get help instead.
Remove all obstacles in your way before lifting.
Use handholds or place your fingers under the load.
Breathe in and then lift slowly as you breathe out. Keep the object close to your body, and avoid jerking
and twisting motions.

Stress Relief Exercises Gently Reduce Stress Naturally
Beneficial Results of Moderate Stress Relief Exercise Include:
•normalize blood sugar
•normalize blood pressure
•reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
•stimulate the release of endorphins, which enhance our feeling of happiness and well being
•lower our levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, so we can feel more relaxed and safe.
•keep our bodies strong and flexible so living can be a more joyful experience.
Stress relief exercises are like shaking out the cobwebs. We can feel relaxed, enlivened and refreshed afterward.
You don’t need to strain after the Olympic gold medal if that’s not your style. Find your own pace.

Dental Benefit Changes
Vacation is accrued per pay period
Effective July 1, 2013, the following changes will be made to EKU’s
dental plan:
BrushTest® - This oral cancer detection biopsy is currently covered as
part of the oral surgery benefit, charging a member copay; however, now
it will be covered under Preventive services to be covered at 100%. The
lab test to analyze the biopsy was not covered but coverage will now be
added to the plan.
Routine and Periodontal Cleanings – The current plan covers two
routine cleanings and four periodontal cleanings in a benefit period. Since
there is virtually no situation where an individual would need six
cleanings in a year, the plan is changing to cover two routine cleanings
and two periodontal cleanings per year.
Sealants – Currently sealants are covered for children to age 16 every 36
months. The benefit is being increased to cover sealants for eligible
children every 24 months.
Space Maintainers – Currently space maintainers are covered for
children up to the age of 12. The benefit is being changed to cover for
children up to age 14.
based on the below schedule.
1-4 years of service = 10 days/year
5-9 years of service = 15 days/year
10-14 years of service = 20 days/year
15+ years of service = 22 days/year
Your maximum accrual is your annual
allowance times 2 years. For
example, if you have worked here 6
years, you would begin maxing out on
vacation at 30 days.
