Maths English Science RE Computing P.E

Maths
We will be looking at revision of the following:
Place value with reading, writing, comparing and ordering
up to 7 digit numbers and numbers up to 3 decimal
places; rounding to a given degree of accuracy;
comparing, ordering and calculating the difference
between negative numbers.
Calculation methods of addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division using mental and written
methods; the order of operations; solving missing
number problems; solve equations involving one and two
unknowns; finding missing angles and lengths.
Calculating the mean average; reading and marking
coordinates in the four quadrants; finding missing
coordinates in a polygon.
Equivalence simplifying fractions and changing improper
fractions into mixed numbers and vice versa; adding and
subtracting fractions with different denominators;
multiplying pairs of fractions and dividing fractions by
whole numbers; solve problems involving ratio.
Properties of 2D and 3D shapes; using protractors and
compasses; parts of a circle; understand volume and
area.
We will also study:
Famous mathematicians and their different ways
to multiply; binary numbers; solve mathematical
puzzles; find digit roots; learn about Fibonacci
sequences and Pythagoras’ theorem; formal
methods for division.
Science
Changing Circuits
In this topic, we will use recognised symbols for
electrical circuits, compare and give reasons for
variations in how components function and associate
brightness of a lamp or volume of a buzzer with the
number and voltage of cells used in the circuit.
Forces & Movement
We will explore the effects of friction on movement
and find out how it stops or slows moving objects. We
will also learn about the effects of levers, pulleys and
simple machines on movement.
RE
DT
We will explore savoury dishes within food and nutrition
with cooking from other cultures and create a Mayan feast.
We will also study structures with Temple designs linked to
our Science topic.
Art

Athletics
Demonstrate the difference between long and short running
styles. Take part in competitions with precision, speed, power
and stamina. Show accuracy and correct technique for a range
of throwing skills.
Swimming
We will be learning how to swim competently, confidently and
proficiently.
We will be using a range of strokes effectively and performing
safe self-rescue in water.
English
Adventure Fiction
We will explore fast-paced action writing based on spy missions deep
in Mayan lands. We will look at how to tension is built, how
characters are developed and how they overcome adversity in the
face of danger and threat. We will write our own short story
versions.
Instructional Text/Newspaper & Online articles/Persuasive Text
We will go on an imaginary time travelling mission to write an
instructional travel guide to escape the Mayan civilisation after we
have studied effective instructional writing. We will also write in a
journalistic and persuasive manner using Mayan inspired themes.
Poetic Voice
The children will study poems for creating imagery and their use of
poetic features to include those using free verse in letter form. We
will also apply our knowledge of poetry features with Mexicaninspired performance poetry.
We will develop our 3D art skills by working in relief and
with freestanding sculpture as we create Mayan masks,
Mayan stelae and replicate the murals of the Bonampak
temple.
The children will also develop their sketching skills to
develop line, texture and form.
The Work of the Apostles
In this topic, the children will learn that the apostles of Jesus
were ordinary people who answered the call to follow Jesus.
They will reflect on their own calling as a follower. Also, they
will further understand the following: how difficult life was for
the first apostles; reflect on how they changed, before and
after the Holy Spirit and how the early Christian community
lived.
Called to Serve
In this topic, the children will learn that they are called to serve
God by using their gifts in his service and the service of other
people. They will study the Sacrament of Confirmation and learn
specifically about Holy Orders and Marriage as ways through
which people can serve God.
History
Computing
Technology in our Lives
Learn about how the internet regulates itself, how to trace
the origins of webpages and how information is transported.
Programming
Revise the basics of programming and extend their
knowledge into more complex commands. Continue to develop
and improve algorithms and debug programs.
As the basis of our topic, we will learn how the Maya
Civilisation grew so strong when the odds against it were so
huge. They will also explore the characteristics and features
of the Mayan society and comparing it with the state of
Britain at that time i.e. AD1100. Investigating the evidence
left behind, we will interpret life in the land of the ancient
Mayans and we will use enquiry to understand the abrupt end
of this civilisation in this period of Mesoamerican history.
