Russian Studies - IGS

ADDITIONAL COURSES GUIDE
Russian Studies (RUSS: 65)
2016-17 Undergraduate Bulletin
The following list should be used only as a GUIDE for selecting courses to fulfill Additional Course
requirement for the International and Global Studies major or minor with a concentration in Russian
Studies.1 Courses highlighted in yellow represent RECOMMENDED courses (see also “Lists of
Recommended Courses”). IGS-marked offerings taught in a given semester appear in the Course
Schedules (consult the “Category” listing) published by the University Registrar’s Office. Both this Guide
and the Registrar’s Course Schedules are subject to change as courses are added to or deleted from the
curriculum. Final IGS credit decisions are subject to approval by the Director of IGS or a designated
Program advisor.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS NOTE: IGS majors pursuing this concentration must complete 18 sh of Additional
Course work at the 200 level or above, with at least 9 sh at the 300 level or above. At least 12 sh of this
work must focus on Russia (or its former satellites),2 with at least 6 sh done at the upper-level (300 level
and above); the remaining 6 sh (to complete the 18 sh requirement) may OR may not focus on Russia (or
its former satellites). In addition, although Additional Courses for this concentration may be selected from
any of the four course categories, choices must comply with the distribution requirement for the IGS major:
i.e., up to 9 sh in a single subject category and no more than 6 sh in any other. Unless otherwise indicated
(below), these courses must also focus on the “modern” period: i.e., from the 19th century through the
present.

1
While the IGS minor with a concentration in “Russian Studies” resides in IGS, the “Russian” minor resides in the Department of
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
2
For the purposes of IGS, “Russia” designates the state known as the Russian Federation since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Courses focusing on former Soviet satellites, particularly those in Eastern Europe (e.g., Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania,
Albania, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Belarus, and the Ukraine), the North and South Caucasus region (e.g., Chechnya, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, and Georgia), and Central Asia (especially the “Stans”), may also be credited toward elective requirements.
