Gildredge House Bulletin Issue 20, 12th February 2016 Today we wore red and had a popular cake sale for British Heart Foundation’s ‘Wear It, Beat it’ fund-raising campaign. Pictured is Mr Roy Payton, David Lloyd British Heart Foundation Ambassador, with students. From the Head Teacher This week has been extremely busy in the lead-up to the half term holiday. On Wednesday Year 7 students enjoyed a special Challenge session at which we held the Routes into Languages Spelling Bee. You can read all about this foreign language competition below. On Thursday, we held our Year 9 Parents Evening. It was great to welcome so many parents in support of their sons and daughters’ GCSE options process. This week has also involved further recruitment interviews. We welcomed candidates for an administrative position and also for Primary Class Teacher, for which we got a very high number and quality of applicants. So far we are delighted with appointments we have made and look forward to releasing news of our appointments in the next Bulletin. Today we have been fund-raising for British Heart Foundation (BHF). Mr Roy Payton, David Lloyd BHF Ambassador, came in during this morning’s cake sake, which was organised by a small group of students. Our ‘wear red’ mufti day and cake sale, organised by 7J, raised funds for this charity. I hope you all have an enjoyable and restful half term holiday! What is the most common behavioural issue you have to deal with? What is your preferred method of punishment? Psychology students posed to teachers and teaching assistants as part of their recent fascinating study into controlling student behaviour. The students, pictured below, collated their findings into an impressive study, These were just a few of the which has been published in this questions which Year 12 month’s edition of ‘ATP Today’, the magazine of the Association for the Teaching of Psychology. Mrs H Kitching Teacher i/c Psychology Foreign Language Spelling Bee School Finals The Languages Department staged the whole-school finals of the Foreign Language Spelling Bee on Wednesday afternoon. This is the second year running that we have entered this nationally-run contest, organised by Routes Into Languages. All Year 7 students took part in Stage 1 just before Christmas, competing with their classmates for the top five spots in their class. Our final 30, therefore, were competing for just three places in the regional finals to be held at the University of Brighton in the Summer Term. The students were also competing for their houses so every correctly-spelled word counted. Kane Benton made a very strong start with 12 words in 60 seconds. He was soon followed by Gabriel Watson with an impressive 7 words. Competition between the students was fierce and nerves were at an all-time high. This time, the contestants had to translate and spell as many Joseph Terry made a strong start words in French as they could in but nerves got the better of him 60 seconds in front of the whole and, despite not passing, he of Year 7! ended up with 6. Gildredge House Bulletin The Widdows twins, Isabelle and Jasmine, did a sterling effort, getting 7 points between them for Hopkins House. Benedict Noon however shot into first place with a faultless 14 word run. Then came Livia Domaingue, with her extraordinary score of 9. But it was Freya Armstrong who caused the biggest upset. The sister of last year’s national finalist Rudi tore into third place with 11 points, Issue 20, 12th February 2016 knocking a very disappointed Jakob Berhane (10 points) out of the running. In the end, it was an excellent team effort that put Ravilious in first place, earning 60 house points with a joint score of 48 words. Well done to them and to Kane, Benedict and Freya who will all go on to the Regional Finals. Bonne chance! Monsieur J Gardner Head of Languages Year 7 Spelling Bee finalists, who will now go through to the regional competition GH students selected for GB Ultimate Squad Against the odds (and the elements), Eastbourne students Anastasija Timofejeva and Marketa Carruthers have been selected to represent Great Britain U17 Women in the upcoming European Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Belgium. The girls, who are Year 9 students at Gildredge House, joined around 30 others, many of whom were two years their senior, at trials in Coventry where they were put through their paces. “It was a fantastic experience,” said Marketa. “We did shuttle runs, lots of drills and played some games. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to play with them all again.” Selected players received emails notifying them of their success and inviting them to the next training session in March. Their fellow student, Connor Burleigh, who turned 14 the day before the trials, was one of approximately 70 boys at the U17 Men’s session. Connor has been invited to take part in the training squad of 29 that will be reduced to 24 nearer to the tournament date. Miss McCollin, Ultimate Frisbee coach at Gildredge House and a former GB player said: “I am extremely proud of all three. This is an incredible opportunity, especially as they could be playing at this level for another two years. I can’t wait to see how much they improve over the next few months and hopefully they’ll bring lots of new tricks back to us in Eastbourne!” Outdoor Learning Environment Shed-building day Thank you to all the hard-working, dedicated staff and community team that had the vision to turn a pile of recycled pallets into a great storage shed for the Reception classes. It really does show what can be achieved on a low budget when there's enough enthusiasm to just go for it! The main structure is now in place and next week we will clad the outside, make a door and start to prepare the roof to plant up. It was lovely when the Reception children came out on Thursday to take up ringside seats to watch the work in progress. The children all seemed fascinated and it stimulated lots of interesting discussions between the children and their teachers about what was going on. If any Design Technology students are interested in taking part in creating the green roof part of the build, please get in touch with Mr Hamilton on [email protected] and we can organise a session where we work together on this. Mrs C Shoosmith Gildredge House Bulletin Issue 20, 12th February 2016 Lower School News Flat as a Pancake! On Tuesday, we had a day of pancakes – eating them, racing with them and even using them to make symmetrical patterns with sweets! In our assembly, Mrs Williamson was chosen to race against Nathy all the way round the hall. Both competitors had to flip their pancakes as they ran and our cheers could be heard outside by parents waiting to pick up their children. It was a close-run event, but Nathy was the victor! Then it was time for our Year 1 races. We raced in Houses and most of the pancakes ended up on the Hall floor. We then had a challenge to see who could pick up the most bits of pancake and Frankie won! Gildredge House Bulletin Issue 20, 12th February 2016 Attack! What an amazing end to a very busy half term in Year 1! This week in Year 1 we became knights and learned how to attack a castle. With our Year 8 friends, we discovered how to make a trebuchet or catapult out of very sticky marshmallows and skewers. We had a competition to see who could fire our marshmallows the furthest. We measured the distance using our hand-spans and some even went as far as 20 hand spans! We also had a target to hit and Rubie -Rose managed to hit the bullseye! Our favourite part was wearing the special safety goggles and working with our Year 8 friends. Some of the marshmallows didn’t quite make the target and ended up in our tummies! Gildredge House Bulletin Issue 20, 12th February 2016 Chinese New Year Parent Morning in Lower School Adolescence is a rough ride. You've got existential angst, mood swings, fashion fiascos, terrifying physical changes, never enough money... And that's just the parents. How well do you know yours? Gildredge House Bulletin Issue 20, 12th February 2016 Sport News On Saturday, two slightly depleted Year 7A & 7B Gildredge House Rugby Squads made their way to Horsham for our much anticipated fixture with Christ’s Hospital. On a very windy day, the A team started well and then defended superbly to go in at half-time 0-0. In the second half, despite some excellent rugby and defence, the athleticism of the CH boys told as they ran in five unanswered tries, mostly from their own half. The B team also showed great character to compete well whilst going down 25-10, Stewart Richardson scoring two tries. The hospitality, as always, was excellent.
