Dry Eyes
March 2017
If your eyes feel dry and itchy, take a closer
look at your medications. Certain prescriptions
can dry out the surface of the eye, so talk to your
physician about your symptoms.
To Your Health: You Need a Hug
Studies indicate hugs can reduce stress, lower
blood pressure and improve attitude. Regular
hugging can also relieve anxiety and boost the
immune system. If you don’t have a friend or
family member handy, then give yourself a hug.
Read All About It
If you want to feel happier, read an adventure
story. A study found that when people read
about someone else’s awe-inspiring experience,
they felt more satisfied and less stressed than
people who were simply shown something that
made them happy.
Popcorn Pick:
‘The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’
The promise of gold treasure buried in the
mountains of Mexico brings together three
American prospectors in this classic tale about
the effects of greed. Based on B. Traven’s
adventure novel of the same name, the 1948
film was directed by John Huston and stars his
father, Walter Huston, alongside Humphrey
Bogart and Tim Holt. Both Hustons won
Academy Awards for their work on the film—
John for best director and best adapted
screenplay and Walter for best supporting actor.
It was the first father-son win in Oscar history.
Spring Is on the Way
March 20 marks the first day of spring and the vernal
equinox, when the hours of daylight and darkness are
nearly equal.
Irish Pride
This year marks the 255th anniversary of New York
City’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. During the first
celebration in 1762, Irish soldiers stationed in the
Colonies wore green, sang songs and played music to
show pride for their homeland.
Final Four Fever
After March Madness unfolds, the American sports
obsession known as the Final Four will play out in
Arizona, beginning March 31. The NCAA Men’s
Division I champions will be crowned after the
championship game April 3 at the University
of Phoenix.

Optimism Month
March is Optimism
Month, and studies show
that looking on the bright
side is good for your
health. Optimists are
better at problem-solving,
have stronger immune
systems, and recover faster
from illness and injury
than pessimists.
Shamrock Shake
For some, the return of
the Shamrock Shake is the
first green of the spring
season. McDonald’s
famous mint-flavored,
green-dyed milkshake goes
on its menu for a limited
time around St. Patrick’s
Day. Since it was
introduced in 1970, more
than 60 million of the
shakes have been sold.
Step Stool Safety
Step stools are handy
around the home, but
poorly designed versions
can increase your risk of
falling. Look for a stool
with sturdy legs, rubber
tips and a base that’s wider
than the top.
Windy Planet
If you think March is
windy where you live,
consider this: Gusts on
Neptune, the windiest
planet in our solar system,
blow at more than
1,200 mph.
Positive Thought
“Use what talents you
possess; the woods would
be very silent if no birds
sang there except those
that sang best.”
—Henry Van Dyke
