Of the thousands of scarf patterns written over the years I’m sure there’s one out there like this. However, I’ve not seen it so I’ve written down how I do it and want to share it with you. Please enjoy! About Face! Double Twist Scarf Worked In-The-Round Gloria Tracy Design Palette Fingering 185 sts on #6 ndls Wool of the Andes Sport 175 sts on #7 ndls Wool of the Andes Worsted City Tweed HW Heavy Worsted 175 sts on #9 ndls 155 sts on #10½ ndls Each of these scarves have been placed around the neck, twisted once then placed around again. The idea for this scarf came when I saw a pattern for a scarf that looked similar to this. It had wide knit and purl ribs worked in rows across the narrow width of the scarf. It was finished by twisting one end twice then grafting all those stitches with Kitchner stitch worked in knit and purl ribs! Yikes! Now, I’m willing to graft eight to twelve plain knit stitches for the toe of a sock, but I have no desire to chant my grafting mantra over fifty plus rib stitches! There had to be an easier way! Gloria Tracy Design – [email protected] – Fall 2011 Page 1 Hmmm…. Why couldn’t I work stockinette and reverse stockinette sections across the long edge, give it two twists then work it in the round? Why not indeed?!? I’ve experimented with different weight yarns, needle sizes and circumferences and here’s what I’ve found: I like the drape of using a needle a couple sizes larger than is usually used for the yarn weight. I’ve also found that casting off with a needle a couple sizes larger than used on the scarf will pretty close to equal the cast on tension. The inherent characteristic of top and bottom stockinette edges to curl offers opportunity to play with color combinations. You can make all your favorites plus use your leftovers to make scarves to match your projects. Knit Picks Yarn name Palette Wool of the Andes Wool of the Andes City Tweed HW I’ve made some so that with the double twist they snug up around the neck as you can see in the top two scarves. The bottom two are a little longer. You can make them any length you want and twist them as many times as you want. Of course, the amount of yarn needed will vary depending on the weight of the yarn, size of the needles and the number of stitches cast on. I’ve given you the total weight of the scarves pictured and the ball yardage of the Knit Picks yarns used for them. Also, if you’re using more than one color, you’ll need to allow for additional yardage in each color. Lay it on a table with the cast on edge to the center and the working yarn to the right. Carefully make 2 complete twists around the left needle, place a marker on the right needle, then join. *K 4 rounds, p 4 rounds, rep from * 2 more times, then knit 4 more rounds. To equalize the tensions of the bound off and cast on edges, this is the way I bound off: Using a needle two sizes larger than used on the scarf, knit 1, *place the st back on the LH needle, knit 2 tog through the back loops, rep from * until all sts are bound off. Weave in the two tails. Wear immediately! I kept my scarves in an odd number of sections so the edges would curl the same way. I used seven sections on these scarves, but you could certainly work five if you have limited yarn or nine if you want a wider scarf or have fine yarn. Gloria Tracy Design – [email protected] – Fall 2011 Page 2 Here are pictures of some of the other scarves I’ve made. I really like the effect of the multicolor yarn. Both men and women appreciate a nice warm neck in cold weather so don’t forget the guys in your life! I have a request for a scarf in camo colors from an avid duck hunter. It gets pretty cold out there on the pond!
