Dependent and Independent Clauses
Directions: Each of the following sentences contains one dependent clause. Write the entire dependent
clause for each sentence. Remember that a dependent clause will contain a subject and verb but will not
express a complete thought.
Example: After Cesar was killed, his nephew Octavius gained power.
After Cesar was killed
Because he was Cesar’s nephew, Octavius hunted Cesar’s assassins after his death.
After he fought in Egypt and fought in Rome, he became emperor is all but name.
He was fortunate that the army had supported him.
Acting as if he himself were emperor, he was treated as one.
Since he was given the honorary title of Augustus, he was known as Cesar Augustus.
After Cesar Augustus died, the nature and government of Rome evolved gradually.
Since many emperors appointed their heirs, control of the empire would be hereditary.
There were twelve emperors in the century following Augustus’s death though only four were
related to Augustus himself.
9. Augustus’s line ended in A.D. 68 when Nero died.
10. Although the Senate might endorse or appoint a successor, real power remained with the army.
