THE JUMP (INTRODUCTORY SESSION) Warm-up See warm-up activity card for suggestions. Suggested session activities: Jumping Joe This activity should be performed to music. Children work in pairs and form a large circle. The children hold hands and face their partner. They then perform two jumps to the right, two jumps to the left, three quick jumps on the spot and then the children skip round the circle for 4/8 beats of the music and then repeat. The development and extension sessions include additional movements to the dance so the children should be encouraged to memorise the movements for the following session. X X X X X X X Jumping Joe X X X X X Jumping Square Use lines, cones or skipping ropes to mark out a square. Children stand on adjacent lines, facing into the square. On command the children have to move to the opposite side of the square without touching any of the children moving to the adjacent side of the square. The teacher can vary the activity from hopping, jumping, skipping and hop scotch and use animal names such as frog, rabbit, kangaroo for the actions. To make the game competitive if a child makes contact with another child they can be temporarily frozen and the team with the most children crossing the square to the other side wins. XX X X X X X X X X X X Hot Hoops Children stand behind the start line with a bean-bag. They throw the bean-bag into one of the hoops, the children must then travel through the hoops by either jumping or hopping but they can’t land in the hoop with the bean bag. Then they travel back through the hoops to the start line. X Hot Hoops relay Use the hoops but not the bean-bag. The children line up behind the start line and then in turn travel up and back through the hoops. The teacher can vary how the children travel i.e. hop, jump, hop-scotch etc. Cool-down See Cool-down activity card for suggestions THE JUMP (DEVELOPMENT SESSION) Warm-up See warm-up activity card for suggestions. Suggested session activities: Jumping Joe This activity should be performed to music. Children work in pairs and form a large circle. The children hold hands and face their partner. They then perform two jumps to the right, two jumps to the left and three quick jumps on the spot, followed by one jump forward and one jump back. Then the children skip round the circle for 4/8 beats of the music and then repeat. The extension session includes additional movements to the dance so the children should be encouraged to memorise the movements for the following session. X X X X X X X Jumping Joe X X X X X Jumping Mats The children stand in a space on a small mat or in a chalk square. The teacher then shouts out e.g. left and the children have to jump to the left off their marker and then back again. When the teacher says down, the children bend down, up, and the children jump up, behind and they jump backwards off the mat etc. The teacher can make the task more difficult by asking the children to move in the opposite direction to the command. Parachute Jump Children stand on a very low level bench with a mat placed next to the bench. A chalk cross is marked on the mat and the children have to jump off the bench and land on the target. Emphasize the control needed for a good landing and encourage children to land in the ‘motorbike’ position (see coaching points on technique sheet) with eyes focussed forward. x x The children can jump off forwards and then can be asked to jump sideways off the bench. Jump Jockey Low-level hurdles or skipping ropes on the floor are set out in a line and the children have to run and jump over the hurdles past the finish post and return down the side of the hurdles to the start line. The children can choose a name for their ‘horse’ and the teacher can give a running commentary as they go over the hurdles. A small mat can be added after a hurdle to represent a water jump. X Jump Jockey Derby or relay race The children can race in pairs over the hurdles, or the children can use the course as a relay race. Cool-down See Cool-down activity card for suggestions THE JUMP (EXTENSION SESSION) Warm-up See warm-up activity card for suggestions. Suggested session activities: Jumping Joe This activity should be performed to music. Children work in pairs and form a large circle. The children hold hands and face their partner. They then perform two jumps to the right, two jumps to the left and three quick jumps on the spot, followed by one jump forward and one jump back, one twist to the left and one twist to the right. Then the children skip round the circle for 4/8 beats of the music and then repeat. X X X X X X X Jumping Joe X X X X X Helicopter Ride Each child when participating will need a skipping rope. The child swings the skipping rope round in a circle at a low level (like a helicopter blade) and the child jumps over the rope. This will help the children to develop the timing of the jump and also adjust the height of their jump. Extension activity; the children can be asked to move about the space whilst jumping. On and Off A bench is needed for each group of children. In turn a child is asked to move along the bench by jumping on and off the bench. More confident children can also jump over the bench. Hopping Mad Set out an obstacle course to incorporate most of the activities undertaken during the jumping sessions. The children can be timed as they complete the course and then try and beat their previous best or the course can be made into a relay race. If a ladder is not available replace with wave machine activity. x XX Hot hoops X Parachute jump ladder run Jump Jockey Cool-down See Cool-down activity card for suggestions
