Camels Keep Cool
What do you think it is like in a desert? If you went on a trip to a
desert, the first thing you would notice is the heat. Most deserts are
very hot. The heat would make you thirsty. Most deserts don’t have
much water to drink, though. It may seem like it would be very difficult
to live in a desert. But many animals have learned to live in these hot
and dry lands. One of these animals is the camel.
1
Camels look a lot like horses. They walk on four long legs and
have large heads. Camels look different in an important way, though.
Camels have large humps, or bumps, on their backs. These humps are
what make camels famous. They also allow camels to live in the tough
desert lands. Some camels have one hump, but others have two.
2
Many people believe a camel’s humps are full of water. This is not
true. The humps are actually full of fat. When a camel eats, some of the
fat from the food stays in the hump. Later, if the camel does not have
food or water, it can use some of this stored fat. The fat makes the camel
strong enough to keep going until it finds more food and water.
3
Camels have other ways of dealing with hot and dry places. They
have thick fur that you might think would make them warm. But their
fur actually keeps them cool by reflecting, or pushing away, sunlight.
