Students enrolled in French at Victoria have the possibility of attending the French Summer School at the Université de la Nouvelle‐Calédonie (UNC) in Nouméa from 21 November to 11 December 2016 by enrolling in third trimester course, FHSS 210/FHSS 310. FHSS 210 Language Study Abroad and FHSS 310 Study Abroad for Language Learners allow students to take an approved third trimester language course in a relevant country and gain 20 points towards their BA, but not towards the relevant major. On their return, all students must submit a Portfolio (50%), a 1000/1300 word essay in the target language (or a 2,000 word essay in English for those who take FHSS 210 as beginners) (30%), and a 10/15 minute oral presentation (20%) in the target language. A pass/fail grade for FHSS 210/FHSS 310 will be awarded by the end of Trimester 3. Students from any background who have completed a minimum of 40points at 100‐level may enrol in FHSS 210. To enrol in FHSS 310, French students must have completed at least 40 points in French, and have reached a minimum proficiency level equivalent to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Interested students must register their interest to Dr Myreille Pawliez as early as possible, and no later than 3 June 2016 if they wish to be considered for the French Embassy grant. Students must also obtain full approval from the French Programme Exchange Liaison Coordinator (Dr Myreille Pawliez, [email protected], VZ 511) and from the Head of School (Dr Sally Hill, [email protected], VZ 601) and have added the course at the FHSS Student and Academic Services Office (Murphy, Level 4). The French Embassy in Wellington offers a small grant towards the French Summer School (about €400). Students wishing to be considered for it should notify Dr Myreille Pawliez by 3 June 2016. The top candidate will be selected by the French Programme and the French Embassy notified. The amount of this grant is paid directly to UNC and the recipient must pay his/her reduced fee to UNC by 30 September 2016. Once enrolled in FHSS 210/FHSS 310, students are eligible to apply to the Victoria International Leadership Programme (VILP) Manager for a short course Mobility Grant of $600. Registered VILP participants can apply for an additional $400 VILP Global Explorer Grant. Applicants for this must have completed a certain proportion of the programme by the time of application. Grant applications close 28 October 2016. Students must pay the French Summer School fee, the return flight, travel insurance and food, and their enrolment with UNC must be completed by 30 September 2016. Students must also pay the Victoria fee for FHSS 210/FHSS 310. A fee subsidy may apply once enrolments have been finalised. Enrolment in FHSS 210/FHSS 310 should be completed by 1 November 2016. The UNC course fee (€1260) includes classes, on‐campus accommodation, a range of cultural activities, and transfers from and to the airport but does NOT include flights, travel insurance, meals or bank transfer fees. The total number of students accepted will not exceed 45, divided into 3 groups of 15. While at UNC, Victoria students must attend all classes (56 hours) as follows: - creative writing workshop and grammar - phonetics, pronunciation, speaking - oral & written practice - lectures on themes related to New Caledonia - various cultural activities - Students can opt to take the Test de connaissance du français (TCF), valid for two years for about €50. At the end of the course, students receive a teaching report and a transcript from UNC. Victoria requirements for FHSS 210/FHSS 310 should also be completed by that date. Checklist for students To be considered by the French Programme for the French Embassy grant, you must notify Dr Myreille Pawliez by 3 June 2016. This grant is sent directly to UNC, and the successful applicant must pay his or her UNC reduced fee no later than 30 September 2016. Confirm intention of enrolment with UNC French Summer School and in FHSS 210/FHSS 310 to Dr Myreille Pawliez as early as possible. Complete the online UNC French Summer School for Students application form and the Student commitment form. You also need to provide a copy of your passport and student ID and send your full payment to UNC (see Student Commitment form for UNC bank details) no later than 30 September 2016. Note that there are no daily flight between New Zealand and New Caledonia and that you must be in Nouméa by 20 November 2016 and won’t be able to leave Nouméa before 12 December 2016. Make sure that your passport is valid. No visa is required. Let UNC know of your arrival and departure times so that they can organise the airport shuttle. You need to budget about NZ$100 per week for food. Your accommodation includes a kitchenette and weekly transport is available for you to buy food. There are several student cafeterias on campus. If you wish to take the TCF (a French proficiency test), allow about NZ$50. It is also recommended that you budget for contingencies. Before departure, fill in the Information form available from Dr Myreille Pawliez, French Programme Exchange Liaison Coordinator, VZ 511 and return it with all the required information. These details will be kept confidentially in the School of Languages and Cultures for the duration of your stay.
