Picasso’s Women and their Influence on His Art
Fernande Olivier-first muse with Picasso during his Rose period and early Cubism. Said
about Picasso, he was a workaholic and a jealous lover who often kept her locked up
when she created a memoir called “Loving Picasso: The Private Journal of Fernande
Olivier” Picasso left Fernande for Eva Gouel, a short lived affair.
Eva Gouel-had a secret affair with Picasso while Picasso was still with Fernande. Eva
introduced Picasso to theater and ballet, while entertaining dealers and critics.
Olga Koklova-Russian Ballet dancer and became Picasso’s first wife, which changed his
social life and work. Instead of being with his former bohemian friends with the
bourgeois, an upscale, rich group of people. Picasso and Olga had a son named Paul, and
created many dedication pieces to both of them. As marriage disintegrated, Picasso
produced smaller, three dimensional forms in a violent, aggressive style and colors that
expressed anxiety over Koklova. As their marriage was disintegrating, Olga suffered a
nervous breakdown and continually stalked Picasso and his mistresses to gain notoriety.
Three Dancers-1925-surrealist evokes a sense of violence in work.
Marie-Therese Walter-mistress of Picasso who stole him away from Olga. Sources say
they met when she was 15, which was an illegal sexual relationship. Speculation on the
content of the drawings from the 1930’s that Marie Therese may have had an abortion
during that period as well. Hung herself in her home.
Dora Maar-an accomplished photographer who met Picasso in Paris in 1936. Source of
Picasso’s surrealist images. Became Picasso’s lover and muse for seven years. Captured
the step by step process of “Guernica”, a protest against the civil war.(Dora’s features
appear in the painting. Seen as the tragic muse of Picasso. Spent a few years attempting
to recover her mental health that she had lost near the end of their relationship.
Francoise Gilot-23, self-possessed art student in Paris. Struggled with a relationship with
Picasso for ten years while he continuted to be a domineering, unfaithful man. Only
mistress with the ability to leave Picasso and wrote a book called “Life with Picasso” in
which he tried to stop its publication.
Jacqueline Roque-dominated last twenty years of his work. Played the role as secretary,
interpreter, cook, driver, nurse, and model. Saw the years with Jaqueline as isolation of
himself and the paintings of the women are about the relationship between the artist and
the muse. After Picasso’s death, she shot herself.
