The intimate setting allows transitioning toddlers and new Children’s House students to become familiar with what the new classroom environment and surroundings will bring. A lead Montessori Children’s House guide will help students prepare for the Children’s House experience and larger community of friends. Practical life activities and Montessori didactic sensorial materials will be introduced along with fundamental Montessori concepts of grace and courtesy. Space is limited! Science is all about exploration, discovery and the "wow" factor! The children will be introduced to concepts such as vibrations, air pressure, water pressure, reaction, magnetic force and nonNewtonian mixture. Campers will bring a few experiments home to make more discoveries with you too! So be ready to explore with them! Crafty Corner Session: Time: Ages: Session I (June 19-23) 9am - 12pm Children’s House Students Campers will explore their creative side as they construct original works of art while dabbling in the world of endless crafts. After the dust settles on all the DYI projects, campers will be smiling from ear to ear because of all the creative fun they will have throughout the week! Parents prepare to be amazed! Exploring Art in the World Session: Time: Ages: Session I (June 19-23) 1pm - 4pm Children’s House Students Painting, drawing, rubbing and sculpting! Children need a variety of experiences to assist them in exploring art in their environment as well as in the world. Through art, children learn to value their own uniqueness and to appreciate the individuality of others. The use of various art mediums, the techniques and the processes help develop the artistic and creative potential of each child. Our young artists will explore art from various cultures of the world and examine the works and styles of famous artists such Van Gogh, Mary Cassatt and Picasso to name a few. During the week, campers will mix geography with music and sample a vast selection of instruments, to tell stories of people and their origins. Campers will have fun developing rhythms with an assortment of percussionbased instruments. Campers will also construct handmade instruments as they dig deep into the roots of the music they create. Global Transportation Session: Time: Ages: Session II (June 26-30) 9am - 12pm Children’s House Students Campers will spend the week exploring a multitude of vehicles and vessels that are found across the globe. Come and create your passports and discover the many ways of travel! Campers will look at a large selection of sea, land and air bound vehicles and decide the best way to travel to far off lands. Once on location, campers will explore environments, people, animals, art, culture and food all while capturing their most memorable moments in their illustrated journals. Experimental Art Camp Session: Time: Ages: Session III (July 10-14) 9am - 12pm Children’s House Students A passion for art is a special gift that should be expressed in more ways than one! Led by former TMS Elementary Sunset Assistance Tarrah Smallwood, your little one will learn how to use a plethora of materials to create beautiful, lasting masterpieces! In this mixed media art camp our goal is to teach new skills with new media and tap into their ever imaginative ideas. Come learn new ways to make tie-dye note paper, villages out of paper and even a shoe made out of tape. These are some of the fun and creative projects campers will enjoy throughout the week. Swimming & Water Safety @ Session: Time: Ages: Session III (July 10-14) 1pm - 4pm 4 years - 6 years **Non-Napping Campers Campers will be participating in the YMCA’s "Safety Around Water” program. This program is designed to reduce children’s risk of drowning by teaching them basic water safety skills. The Safety Around Water program outlines basic swimming skills to build a sense of accomplishment in children and help prevent drownings." Children who possess basic swimming skills, substantially increase their comfort around water and are more likely to maintain healthy habits throughout life. Campers will be traveling to the Jerry Long Family YMCA, Monday – Thursday and will remain on TMS campus on Friday to participate in some water play activities. This will be a fun and rewarding camp that is sure to benefit the entire family when in and around water. Campers will be exploring the worlds of a wide array of domestic, wild and exotic animals during the week. We will interact with local nonprofit groups, animal rescuers and animal lovers alike. Through visual aids campers will learn about these unique sights, the cultures that surround them and experience these wonders of the world using their own creative hands! Campers will be able to share their existing talents and discover new ones they did not know they possessed in this artistically diverse camp. Some of the themes will be creative movement, drama, storytelling, music, singing, costuming and art. Nature Speaks Session: Time: Ages: Session V (July 24-28) 9am - 12pm Children’s House Students Campers will discover the natural world that surrounds us, as they spend the week outside enjoying and investigating the local flora and fauna. Campers will explore ways to become more observant of the natural world around us. Some of the topics for the week will include bird watching, colors and fragrance of nature, endangered species, leave no trace, deciduous vs. evergreen, just to name a few. Campers will be gathering inspiration and creating nature-based arts and crafts that tell the story of the day’s adventure. Campers will enjoy arts and crafts of a musical nature. Music can be found in every culture all around the world and children respond positively to music, making them want to sing, move and dance! Music helps develop memory, perception, gives children energy and stimulates them emotionally! Camper will learn about a large variety of musical instruments, namely wind, string and percussion based and will use everyday items to create an assortment of instruments throughout the week to take home. French Immersion Session: Time: Ages: Session VI (July 31 – August 4) 9am - 12pm 3 years – 6 years Allez, viens! Campers will gain exposure to French language and culture through enjoying music, food, stories and activities. Throughout the week campers will become familiar with the alphabet, spelling, the days of the week, the months of the year, numbers, colors, weather and a variety of vocabulary. Campers will begin to understand basic conversation and be able to ask and respond to everyday questions. Some of the materials that will be used are wooden blocks, an assortment of natural materials and manufactured building sets just to name a few. Campers will explore these materials daily, discovering which designs and architectural features show strength and/or weakness. Campers will also look at architectural features that are constructed in nature. This will be done by exploring the outside environment and looking for structures that were constructed by animals (i.e.…. birds nest, ant mounds, spider webs, etc…). Campers will mimic what they see and recreate what is found in nature. Discovering the Outdoors Session: Time: Ages: Session VII (August 7-11) 1pm - 4pm Children’s House Students Campers are invited to join in an exploration of the outdoors. Your camper will take part in a nature-based scavenger hunt, help design and create an obstacle course and will be sure to cool off during water play! After a week’s worth of discovery, campers will be left with an increased appreciation of the great outdoors! Join Elementary Lead Guides Ellen Kuppinger and Sarah Pitcher on our 4th annual awesome experience outside. Hike and play in creeks at the river section of Pilot Mountain State Park. Tube the Dan River, hike up Stone Mountain and down again, and tackle the high ropes course at Sky Wild at the Greensboro Science Museum. We always end our week with swimming at Hanging Rock State Park, and this year we are adding the exploration of Torey's cave, used during the Revolutionary War. We emphasize the leave no trace philosophy and experiential learning. Prepare to stop and ogle a rhinoceros beetle if it crosses the trail, or examine newts swimming with us in a mountain lake. Summer Kick Off Session: Time: Ages: Session I (June 19-23) 9am - 12pm 6 years - 12 years Summer is finally here and what better way to kick it off than with a week full of FUN along with friends. Campers will embark on daily adventures on one of the TMS buses, which never take us too far from home. Some of these activities include swimming, exploring our local parks and bowling just to name a few. Behind the Lens Session: Time: Ages: Session I (June 19-23) 1pm - 4pm 6 years – 12 years Join Ms. Terri Burke, TMS mom and professional photographer, and take the leap from star of the photo to artist behind the lens. Campers will unlock the world of photography and discover the remarkable blending of science, technology and art. They will explore the history of image making, be introduced to the fundamental concepts behind capturing light, and learn from each picture they take as they view the week from behind the lens. Clemmons, NC 27012 www.wsmontessori.org 10 Beginning Guitar Camp Session: Time: Ages: Session I (June 19-23) 1pm - 4pm Rising 2nd years - Alumni Our beginning guitar workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of guitar playing. Led by Ms. Brenda Morie, professional musician and TMS Sunset Studio lead, students will be exposed to the basics needed to play music in all styles: the basics of sight reading, chords, scales, tuning the guitar, posture, hand position and more. During the week, campers will compose their own music and lyrics. Other activities include musical rhythm movement games, musical notation drawings, listening sessions that introduce students to a variety of pop, classical, jazz, and world styles; and performances by special guests. This program is a wonderful complement to the Montessori curriculum that gives children sequential training in rhythm and melody applied to the guitar. Friends and family will be treated to a final performance. Campers will need to provide their own working guitar -acoustic, classical or electric with small amp. Rentals are available, so please let me know ASAP if needed, to ensure your camper is ready to play. Session II (June 26-30) Outdoor Adventure Session: Time: Ages: Session II (June 26-30) 8am – 4:30pm or later (end times will vary) Rising 4th years - Alumni Mr. Will is returning to lead this adventurous week and partnering with Ms. Sarah during this exciting assortment of outdoor based adventures. Step beyond your comfort zone and challenge yourself all week long! The week’s adventures will take campers to Pilot Mountain State Park to check out the river section and beyond, Kayak on the New River, navigating a high ropes course, biking at Salem Lake, and end the week swimming at the mountain lake at Hanging Rock State Park. This camp emphasizes leave no trace skills and guarantees that you will make memories not soon forgotten! So round up your friends and catch the bus! This camp will be physically challenging. Woodland Pathfinders Session: Time: Ages: Session II (June 26-30) 9am - 12pm 6 years – 12 years Campers will enjoy a fun-filled week of exploring the outdoors in our own backyard. Campers will learn basic wilderness skills, shelter construction, creating a camp fire, leave no trace techniques, how to read a map and compass, just to name a few. Campers will journey off campus to local parks and explore the recreational amenities that they provide. Cake Boss Session: Time: Ages: Session II (June 26-30) 1pm - 4pm 6 years - 12 years If you haven't had one of Ms. Chrys' cakes, then you don't know what you are missing. Cakes, cupcakes, doll cakes, cake pops...all created by campers, in this unique afternoon camp, Children's House 2 Lead Guide, Ms. Chrys will share her love for baking and the secrets to her delicious treats. We’ll also use objects found in nature and recycled materials to create crafty keepsakes. TRAVELS IN TIME Session: Time: Ages: Session V (July 24-28) 9am – 4pm 6 years – 12 years Quiet in the house...and curtain! During this theatre camp a scientist, a historian and a videographer combine their skills to explore the possibilities of time travel. Does all go well? That's up to the creativity of the cast and crew! Each day will begin with a warm up and theatre games where campers will learn a few tricks of the trade from Ms. Kay's decades of theatrical experience. Then the young entertainers will dive right into rehearsal, selecting characters from throughout history to create the drama. Campers will be exploring the worlds of a wide array of domestic, wild and exotic animals during the week. We will interact with local nonprofit groups, animal rescuers and animal lovers alike. Come spend the week immersed in the animal kingdom. Campers will travel off campus on the TMS buses one or more times throughout the week, discovering animals in their own habitats. Campers will join Elementary Sunset Studio Guide Mr. Travis Fitzgerald and take a deeper look into the world of science using a hands-on approach to investigation and exploration, through experiments that pique their curiosity and imagination. Campers will take part in various physical and chemical reaction experiments, alter sound waves and enjoy the indoor and outdoor environments. Campers will construct their own hypotheses for each experiment and keep an illustrated journal of their findings throughout the week. Worldly Cuisine Session: Time: Ages: Session VI (July 31 – August 4) 1pm -4pm 6 years – 12 years Calling all aspiring chefs! Come take a trip around the world in the TMS kitchen! Let the taste buds lead the explorations of different cultures through a variety of fun finger foods! Fresh ingredients are a must for this mouth-watering camp! Campers will work side by side with Ms. Stephanie each day, preparing food from different countries. Campers will create a cookbook with all the tasty delights to take home and share with the family. Who knew cooking could be this fun! Total Exposure: photography in the field Session: Time: Ages: Session VI (July 31 – August 4) 9am – 4pm Rising 4th years - Alumni Making a picture is easy, but making a good picture is not. TMS parent and professional photographer, Ms. Terri Burke, will lead campers on a series of fun adventures exploring both our urban and our natural environments with cameras in hand. Day trips will take us into Old Salem and Bethabara, hiking in a state park, to the North Carolina Zoo and more. We will learn about the fascinating mixture of art and science behind photography and how to use our digital tools (the camera and the computer) effectively. We will also learn from our own pictures to identify what works best to tell the story we want to be told. Learn how our Montessori environment is home to these important raptors and reptiles. This camp explores the fascinating world of reptiles and raptors not only on the Montessori campus, but all over the world. Safe and stimulating activities include live animal encounters, art activities and a chance to learn about some of the coolest creatures on earth. This camp is led by Alice Barsony former TMS art teacher, environmental educator and all around theater guru. Summer Time Fun Session: Time: Ages: Session VII (August 7-11) 1pm – 4pm 6 years – 12 years Join Ms. Stephanie and grab your swimsuits, sun block and tennis shoes! This camp is all about having Summer Time Fun. Campers will be basking in the essence of summer! Water Fun, visiting local parks, summer adventure & discovery is what campers will encounter throughout the week.
