Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest USDA FOREST SERVICE; INTERMOUNTAIN REGION HUMBOLDT-TOIYABE NATIONAL FOREST Islands in the Sky 2017 Seasonal Positions - Range & Hydrologic Technicians The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be filling up to 10 Range Technician and Hydrologic Technician positions for the 2017 field season. The candidates selected for these positions will operate as part of two-person crews conducting monitoring along streams occupied by federally listed species on livestock grazing allotments. Bunkhouse style housing is available at most duty stations. These positions will occasionally require extended camping (3-4 nights/week) in remote areas. Camping equipment and vehicles will be provided. Some travel to other Districts is required. The work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, steep, rocky surfaces with recurring crouching, reaching, or bending. These positions may require lifting of moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds, walking for long periods with a back pack, horseback riding, driving 4x4 vehicles, operating ATVs or UTVs, pulling horse trailers and extended camping. Austin is 90 miles south of Battle Mountain, NV the nearest full service community; 117 miles north of Tonopah, 112 miles east of Fallon and 178 miles east of Reno. Austin has two gas stations, three motels, two restaurants, and four taverns. Bridgeport Ranger District The Ranger Station is located in Bridgeport, CA, a town of about 600 year-round residents, nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada. In the summer, the area swells with tourists coming to enjoy the scenic beauty and outstanding fishing opportunities. Bridgeport is about 45 minutes from Yosemite National Park, 1 1/2 hours from Lake Tahoe and Gardnerville, NV, and 2 1/2 hours from Reno, NV. Carson Ranger District The Carson District is part of the Sierra Front and consists primarily of the communities of Reno, Carson City, and Minden/Gardnerville. The Ranger Station is headquartered in Carson City, the State Capital of Nevada with approximately 55,000 residents. It is located 30 miles south of Reno (pop. 418,000) and 25 miles east of Lake Tahoe at the foot of the Eastern Sierras. Mountain City/ Ruby Mountains/ Jarbidge Ranger District The Northeast Zone has offices in Elko, NV and Wells, NV. Elko (pop. 30,000) is a full service community with many recreational opportunities. The city is located along Interstate 80 in northeast Nevada between Salt Lake City, UT and Reno, NV. Wells, NV is a small town 55 miles east of Elko on Interstate 80. It lies at the base of the East Humboldt’s, which makes it an ideal location for people who desire quick access to outdoor recreation. Santa Rosa Ranger District The crew will be stationed at the historic Paradise Valley Guard Station in Paradise Valley, NV or the Martin Creek Guard Station north of Paradise Valley. Paradise Valley (pop. 109) is a small rural community that sits at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Recreation opportunities are plentiful with many different camping, hiking, hunting and fishing options available. The town is located 40 miles north of Winnemucca, NV, a full service community. Supervisor’s Office The Forest Supervisors Office is located in Sparks, NV. The City of Sparks is located just east of Reno, NV, at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
