Q. 100.
What does the preface of the Lord’s Prayer teach us?
A.
The preface of the Lord‟s Prayer, which is, Our Father which art in
heaven, teaches us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and
confidence, as children to a father, able and ready to help us; and that we
should pray with and for others.
Memory Verse (say it together): “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart;
I have overcome the world.” When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to
heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have
given him.” John 16:33b – 17:2
Let’s Contemplate
Prayer is an act of worship. The Word of God teaches us that when God is exalted and we are
humbled, we are ready to pray. Read Isaiah‟s vision of our Father which art in Heaven:
(Isaiah 6:1-7)
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of His
robe filled the temple. Above Him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings; with two he covered his face, and
with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is
the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!”
And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with
smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of
a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the
altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and
your sin atoned for.”
Let’s Identify your Need

faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable.
Psalm 115:3
Our God is in the heavens; He does all that He pleases.
Psalm 22:28

Extra Blessings – Take some time to go back over previous devotionals (Sovereign and
Supreme) and write in more phrases!! The bigger your list, the richer your prayers.
Let’s Pray
Repeat these verses back to God making them your own prayer – like this:
I know You are Sovereign over everything because You are the
everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
You never grow weary, you are always watching over me. You are the
one who gives me strength because You alone are mighty.
Kingship belongs to You. You rule over the nations just as You rule over
my heart.

Let’s Contemplate
Prayer is an act of worship. When we pray to Him as His children, we are given access to His
throne! Read Ezekiel‟s vision of our Father which art in Heaven (from Ezekiel 1:1-28)
The heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north,
and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it
were gleaming metal. And from the midst of it came the likeness of four living creatures. Over the heads of the
living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their
heads. And under the expanse, their wings were stretched out straight, one toward another. And each creature
had two wings covering its body. And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many
waters, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they
let down their wings.
And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and
seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from what had the
appearance of his waist, I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And
downward from what had the appearance of his waist, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was
brightness around him. Like the appearance of the [rain] bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the
appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.
And when I saw it, I fell on my face.

1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time
He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for You.
Proverbs 16:9
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
John 3:27
John [the Baptist} answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given
him from heaven.
Extra Blessings – Take some time to go back over previous devotionals (Sovereign and

Let’s Pray
Repeat these verses back to God making them your own prayer – like this:
I humble myself before your mighty hand.
I know you care for me, so I don’t have to worry.
You will direct every step I take today.
You give me everything that I have.

Let’s Contemplate
Prayer is an act of worship. As you bow humbly before our Sovereign King, your faith will
grow stronger as you „speak‟ His mercies. Saying them out loud will help sear them into your
heart. Read Daniel‟s vision of our Father which art in Heaven: (from Daniel 7)
“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took His seat; His clothing was white as snow, and
the hair of His head like pure wool; His throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire
issued and came out from before Him; a thousand thousands served Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand
stood before Him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.
I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and He came
to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion and glory and a
kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him; His dominion is an everlasting
dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly alarmed me, and my color changed, but I
kept the matter in my heart.

Daniel 4:34b
I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his
dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to
generation;
Psalm 115:3
Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.
1 Timothy 6:15-16
He is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone
has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light.
Let’s Pray
Using prayer phrases from the expanding list on your prayer card, begin your
prayer by exalting God. Practice, practice, practice.
Try not to repeat any of the phrases you have already used in this week’s

Let’s Contemplate
Prayer is an act of worship. As you grow stronger in saying aloud how God is Sovereign, you
are practicing for that day when you will see Him, with your eyes, upon His throne. Read
John‟s vision of our Father which art in Heaven: (from Revelation 4:2 - 5:14)
At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated at the throne. And He who sat
there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance
of an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders,
clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, and
rumblings and peals of thunder.
And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures… each of them with six wings, and
day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to
come!” And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who is seated on the throne,
who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who is seated on the throne and
worship Him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are
you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your
will they existed and were created.”
Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels,
numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb
who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in
them saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might
forever and ever!”
And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshipped.

Daniel 4:35
All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and He does according to His
will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth, and none can
stay His hand or say to him, “What have you done?”
Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He increases strength.
Ephesians 2:8-10
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is
the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Let’s Pray
You have learned to begin your prayer by exalting God and humbling
yourself. Remember to jot down phrases you hear during worship services or
devotions, then write them on your prayer card and contemplate them before
you go to the Lord in prayer! Practice, practice, practice.
