The Environmental Technology Centre An Example of Success in PA1 Dr. Gérald BUSCA European Regional Development Fund 2012 ‐ One East Midlands Annual Information Event The Environmental Technology Centre was founded in 2000 at the University of Nottingham, specifically to help small and medium sized businesses to make improvements through the adoption of more efficient use of resources, environmentally friendly working practises and the use of cleaner and more sustainable technologies. History We have been delivering support & knowledge transfer to local businesses since 1996 Achievements • • Networked over 2000 SMEs • • Over 96 Demonstrator Projects 800 SMEs involved in collaborative projects Delivered over 60 Seminars/Events Micro-Mesh Engineering Limited Pre - 2000 the CMTC Support Coalfields Industrial Support Network ETC early 2000 INDUCTION HEATING ETC carried out some tests + MME received a grant £7,500 Benefit: Reduce energy consumption on the line by 90%, reduce waste & improve productivity reduce CO2 and CCL ETC 3 ~ 2005 Supplying Filter to Bombardier but…….Problem We used our resources & expertise and show that the filters were not the source of the problem… Benefit: new contract in managing & maintaining filters for the Bombardier Micro-Mesh Engineering Limited Still ~2005-06 MME received some implementation money£3,500 to buy a new pleating machine much more efficient better filter quality Benefit: Improve productivity and quality Reduce waste We also supported them in developing some Research in Air filters under another University of Nottingham Programme ETC4 ~2010 Solved a problem for their client Problem with contamination on hydraulic oil filter solution analysis and chemical knowledge of hydraulic oils Identify excessive heat generated oxides and polymerised oil that was causing the problem. Benefit: Gain £100,000 contact from the client to supply the filter Now and Moving Forward • Bigger Impacts on the wider community, businesses and in the University of Nottingham • Greater focus on Innovation • Knowledge & Technology Transfer • Working closer with other ERDF Projects • Involving Academics more Directly • Offering greater Opportunities to our clients Impact Recognition "I was impressed by the projects that make full use of the existing universities structure such as the Environmental Technology Centre at Nottingham University.
