Humphrey Warren, born Poynton, England July 7, 1632, third child of Edward
Warren and Margaret Arderne and of Royal Decent through Earls of Warren and
Surrey. He was reared as a merchant and came to Maryland with his young son
Humphrey and was granted Feb. 12, 1662-3 a tract of 300 acres of land called
“Frailty”, in Charles County surveyed for him June 22, 1633, and was patented to
him Aug. 4, 1664. He was an active Protestant, and was appointed a
Commissioner of the Peace, Sept.16, 1670. He died intestate in 1673 at his seat
“Hatton’s Point”, Charles County and May 9, 1673, his estate was administered
and committed to Thomas Howell, who married his widow. He was twice
married in England, and his first wife whose name has not been found died before
1652. His second wife was Eleanor.

2...Humphrey Warren born about 1652, died prior to Feb. 25, 1694-5. Married
first??. second Margery ____. He was appointed a Commissioner
of
Peace
March 2, 1675, and was an active Protestant in 1689. Sept. 4, 1675, was
appointed Colonel of foot in Charles County. He was one of the Committee of
Seven of the Protestant Freemen which seized government of Maryland from the
representatives of Propriety, Aug. 1, 1689, and was a justice of the quorum and a
Coroner of Charles County, 1689. His will was dated Aug. 14, 1689, proved
Charles County, Feb. 25, 1694. He gave to his wife, Margery, during life
“Hatton’s Point”, 500 acres and other property to his children as shown below.
The executors were his wife and son Notley, and the witnesses were Thomas
Bufort, John Gooch and Elizabeth Dutton. (For children see forward.)

before June 13, 1688, Mary Barton, daughter of Captain
William Barton, Jr. of
p p91 Port Tobacco Parish, Charles County, Maryland. Married second Jane ??. He was
brought to Maryland in 1663. Thomas Warren received from his father’s estate
the plantation called “Frailty” where he resided at the time of his death,
and
which he devised to his second wife Jane. June 13, 1688. Captain William
Barton conveyed to his daughter Mary and her husband Thomas Warren a farm
called “Strife” in Charles County, Maryland. His will was dated Jan. 6, 1705-6
and proved Nov. 25, 1710, wherein he mentions wife Jane and children Thomas,
Barton, Elizabeth, Sarah and an unborn child. The witnesses were John Lofte,
Joseph Bowells, and John Harris. (For children see forward.)

CHILDREN OF HUMPHREY WARREN AND MARGERY ???
4...Notley Warren born Dec. 16, 1675, died before Nov. 23, 1710. His father left
“Hatton’s Point” at his mother’s death and personally in lieu of that bequeathed
him by the Honorable Thomas Notley. (Thomas Notley was governor of
Maryland 1676-1679, during the proprietorship of Charles Calvert, third Lord
Baltimore. His will was dated April 3, 1679 and was probated in St. Marys
County, April 6, 1679. In it he mentions his sister Katherine Grudgefield, of
London, and William Nuigsinger, Ralph Smith, friend of Captain Gerrard Slye
and Jane, his wife. Captain Matthew Payne, John Pearce also godchildren
Thomas Notley Goldsmith, Notley Maddox, Notley Warren and Notley
Goldsmith, daughter of John Goldsmith; he left to godson Notley, son of
Benjamin Rozer, “Cerneadby Manor”. Charles Lord Baltimore and Colonel
Benjamin Rozer were executors and residuary legatees the witnesses were
William Digges and Nicholas Sewall.)
5...Benjamin Warren born Jan. 23, 1682, died before Feb. 11, 1705-6 married
Elizabeth Story. He inherited from his father part of “The Hills” and “Warren’s
Discovery”. His will was dated Feb. 3, 1705-6, and proved Feb. 11, 1705-6. He
mentioned wife Elizabeth, and son Humphrey and provides that is both should die
the estate is to pass to “father Walter Story”; witnesses, Richard Morris, John
Haley, Matthew Manfie.
6...Charles Warren born Nov. 10, 1684, inherited part of “The Hills” and 100
acres “Smoot’s Purchase” bought of Edward Smoot, and 100 acres of
“Wicomico’s Fields” bought of William Smoot.
7...Humphrey Warren born Nov. 15, 1691. Inherited two tracts of land.
8...John Warren born June 18, 1687, died before Feb. 13, 1713. Married Judith
??. His father left him 400 acres on west side of
Wicomico River formerly
belonging to John Gooch. His will was
dated Aug. 12, 1713 and was
probated Feb.13, 1713? His wife Judith was executor and was bequeathed
“Hatton’s Point” and his daughter, Mary, “Rich Thicketts”. “The Hills”, and
“Warren’s Discovery” and his daughter, Anne, the tract of land formerly
belonging to John Gooch.“TheTanyard” and “Smoot’s Purchase”, now in the
tenure of Edward Lloyd. Witnesses: John Maddox, Ale Contee, Thomas Lewis.

was Captain of a company of Colonial Melitia, Charles County in 1748. June 8,
1752, with Edward Ford, he was assigned Pew #6 in William & Mary Parish
Church. His will was dated Feb. 3, 1757, proved March 9 1757; in it he mentions
his wife Elizabeth and his eight children; executors were sons Notley and John
Warren; witnesses Charles Bruce, John Ford, William Brown. (For children see

who died before April 29, 1760, intestate (the date of the bond filed in Charles
County June 14, by his widow as administratrix, with her brothers Notley and
John Warren as securities) She married second (his second wife), John Stone of
Port Tobacco, Maryland. His will dated August 6, proved in Charles County by
his widow Sept. 12, 1775. She removed with her children to Pittsylvania County,
Virginia in 1779.

died Feb. 22, 1824 and married at Georgetown, Maria F. Faunteroy born July 17,
1780, also of Royal Descent, and had: Anne E. (who married E.L. Johnson);

Barton Warren of Jacksonville, Illinois born March 1, 1802 married Ann Dorsey

WILLIAM de WARRENNE Earl of Warrenne in France, cousin of William the
Conqueror, was created Earl of Surrey; Lord of Reigate, Conningsburgh; Lord of
Bellencombre, in Normandy; born before 1036; Knight; Count de Warrenne in
Normandy; Councillor in Normandy 1066; Commander in the Norman Conquest, Sept.
1066; Councillor of Regency March-December, 1067; High Forester to King; Joint
Justicer of England, 1074; Honorary Brother of the Abbey of Cluni about 1076; founder
and patron of Lewes and Castliacre priories; died June 24, 1089. He came to England
with the Conqueror, and having distinguished himself at the Battle of Hastings, obtained
an immense portion of the public spoliation. He had large grants of land in several
counties, amongst which were the Barony of Lewes in Sussex and the Manors of
Caristune and Bennington in Linconshire. So extensive, indeed, were those grants that
his possessions resembled more the dominion of a sovereign prince than the estate of a

JOHN WARREN of Poynton, heir, admitted to Gray’s Inn, London, March 4,
1609-10 died June 20, 121. He married (covenant dated Feb. 11, 1593, contract Oct. 28,
1594) Anne Ognal, of Bylkesley, Warwickshire, buried at Stockport, May 1652, and had:
EDWARD WARREN of Poynton, heir born May 10, baptized May 19, 1605
buried at Stockport, Sept. 10, 1687, will dated Jan.3,1683, proved at Chester in 1687. He
was a Royalist and his estates were sequestered, but was pardoned in 1647. He gave the
Herald his pedigree for the “Visitation” Sept. 17, 1663. He had by his first wife, Margaret
Arderne, buried at Poynton, April 20, 1644, ten children of whom:
