Number lines can help children develop an understanding of the number system by providing an important visual image. Leaning to use a physical number line can help a child to develop a facility for counting on mentally. Activities Your worm Number line can be used whole, or split in to 2 using the worm as a numerical number line and the strawberries as a pictorial number line. Activities can start off very simple and increase in difficulty as confidence grows. Placing Numbers Write down the numbers 1-10 on pieces of paper and put them in a bag. Get children to pick out a number in turn and place it on the number line. For an easy version use the worm for a more challenging one use the strawberries. Counting On Get the child to place a coloured worm on a specific number (e.g. 5) then ask then to “show me 2 more than 5” the child then places a second coloured worm. Try doing the same exercise without the markers, “I am thinking of a number and its 2 more than 7, what’s my number?” Alternatively write a few examples of the numbers 1, 2 and 3 on pieces of paper and put them in a bag. Get children to pick out a number and move a worm marker from 0 along the number line corresponding to the number pulled out of the bag. Counting Back Obviously the reverse of counting on. Number Line Hide and Seek Cover up several numbers with the worm markers and ask “what number is the red worm on”, “what number is the green worm on” What’s the Difference Place a worm on 6 and a worm on 9. Count the number of steps needed to move from 6 to 9, “the difference between 6 and 9 is 3” Sport and Playbase Ltd. Units 27 & 28 Skelmanthorpe Business Park. Skelmanthorpe. Huddersfield. HD8 9DZ.
