DHL Supply Chain are working actively
to improve the quality of the environment
in their stores. Lately they have installed
the air cleaner system Zehnder Clean
Air Solutions at the stores in Örebro,
Sweden. The aim is that the products that
are delivered to the DHL clients are even
cleaner and fresher and at the same time
to have a better work environment, more
effective cleaning and lower consumption
of energy.
DHL Supply Chain in Örebro handles fastmoving consumer goods and third
party logistics. Most of DHL's customers
are active in the staple goods and
pharmaceutical sectors, which means
that the company handles sensitive goods
such as alcoholic beverages, personal
hygiene products, cleaning products and
medicines.
"We have a large turnover of items at our
premises, and all the handling of goods
makes it inevitable that dust, spores and
other particles are released into the air.
Cleanliness and hygiene are important in
our line of work. Therefore our cleaning
routines are strict, and we are continuously
working to maintain the highest possible
standard," says Staffan Östman, local
manager at DHL Supply Chain in Örebro.
Close cooperation with DHL
DHL Supply Chain started to search about
one year ago for suitable solutions in
order to further improve the air quality.
Zehnder Clean Air Solutions was selected.
Zehnder has a very close cooperation
with DHL Freight that goes back a couple
of years, and their air cleaning systems
have successfully been installed in all
the six newly built and rebuilt DHL freight
terminals.
The environment has become cleaner, and
less cleaning and maintenance is required.
Measurements of the levels of dust in the
air show that as much as 70 - 85 % of the
air-borne dust has been eliminated.
"Based on the good experience that DHL
Freight had with the air cleaner system
decided DHL Supply Chain to invest in
the Zehnder Clean Air Solutions for the
premises. The aim is to be able to provide
an environment that is as hygienic as

also a competitive advantage for us," says
Staffan Östman.
Flimmer filter catches the dust
During April a total of 42 air cleaning units
were installed at the DHL Supply Chains
60 000 square meters store in Örebro. The
Zehnder units are mounted in high-activity
areas such as the loading and unloading
spaces where there is a large turn-over
of goods, which in turn releases a lot
of dust and particles into the air. There
the innovative flimmer filters catch the
airborne dust so that it does not land on
the products.
"We have not yet made any measurements,
but it looks quite positive. Beside making
it a cleaner environment for our customers'
goods, the air cleaners also force the warm
air down towards the floor where our staff
is working, That means that we can reduce
our heating costs, and in principle retrieve
a large part of the costs for the system,"
says Staffan Östman.
An improved working environment
The dust particles in industrial
environments cause a lot of problems
for people as well as for products and
processes. For people it is mostly about
health effects that may show themselves
as irritations of the upper respiratory tracts,
often causing coughing as a first reaction.
The airborne particles not only affect
the respiratory organs and other internal
organs, but they also affect the eyes and
the skin.
"As the Zehnder Clean Air Solutions
remove most of the airborne dust in our
premises, we prevent this type of health
risk. This investment allows us to offer
the staff at DHL Supply Chain a much
improved work environment," Staffan
