 The display related to our activity is the Harrison Machine called Jumbo

Enduring Understandings:
In the late 19th century there was more industry in the Belleville Illinois area, than
what they have today. Harrison Machinery leading industry in Belleville created
threshers powered by steam.

Activity and Procedures



First we start off with a photo analysis activity, where students are
presented with a picture of a late 19th century steam engine.
o Students will be giving 5 minutes to observe the picture then fill in
the photo analysis sheet.
After the photo has been identify as a steam engine and discussed what it
was use for, students will go the Labor and Industry museum website to
read about Jumbo, the local historic thresher powered by steam.
The students need to acquire information regarding how steam engines
work.
o The students will look up a website “ How stuff works, Steam
engines” to read how the mechanics function in a steam engine
o Students will use their Rate your Reading worksheet to rate their
comprehension of the text.
o After student read the text, the student’s will re-read the information
again to help increase the comprehension rates.
 Vocabulary words will be discussed and clarified during
reading process.





Students will be able to draw their own conclusions on how steam power
aided industry and stimulated the economy
After studying about steam engines students will be expected to design
their own 19th century steam engine.
Students will write below their design what they intend their steam engine
to be use for, and how it will benefit society.
Suggestions for teachers


Have your students relate 19th century industry to current local industry by
researching Belleville Commerce website
Provide extra credit opportunities for students if they have their picture
taken with Jumbo, and/or bring back a pamphlet for their visit of the Labor
and Industry museum.
