Exponents Revisited and Loan Payments - BYU

Virtual Lead Student Lesson Plan
L10: Exponents Revisited and Loan Payments
As the lead student for this week, please view the Lead Student Guide for instructions on how to
facilitate the gathering activities. The Lead Student Guide is located in the “Lead Student Tools”
folder in the course.
During the gathering, feel free to adjust the estimated times listed for each activity. If you feel
your group is confident in the material being discussed, you may not need to use all of the time
and may move on to the next activity.

Choose one verse of scripture that has meaning to you. Read it out loud to the
group. Then, tell them why you chose that verse of scripture.

Vocabulary
Practice
(5-7 min)
In this activity, participants will practice the use and pronunciation of math
vocabulary.
1. Show the following number to the group (either by screen share or through your
webcam): (5x2 )3 = 125x6 .
2. Ask for a volunteer to read the equation in English.
3. Ask the whole group to repeat the correct pronunciation of the number.
4. Ask that participant to write, and show, a new equation to the group and to choose
another volunteer to say it.
5. Ask the whole group to repeat the correct pronunciation of the number.
6. Repeat this process for no more than 10 minutes or until each person has read an
equation.
Math
Exercise 3.3
Part A
Review this week’s Math Exercise 3.3 Part A homework problems. If there are
questions about the assignments, work out a few of the most difficult
problems together as a group.
(8-10 min)
Ask for a volunteer who understands the difficult problems and can explain
how to complete the problem. (It may help to remind people that being able
to explain something to someone else is a great way to reinforce one’s
learning. Try to include everyone.)
Note: Participants may use a whiteboard program, such as “Windows Paint”,
to share their work, or they may write it on a piece of paper and show it to the
group using their webcam.
Small Group Activities
The number of groups (up to 5) will be determined by your whole gathering group size. Small
groups of 3-6 participants are preferred, but it is acceptable to have more than that in a group. If
you decide to divide the group, you should assign each group to one of the Small Group Rooms.
Before separating participants into their small groups, quickly give directions for the small group
activities. (Participants should have copies of the lesson outline to help guide their small group
activities.)
Verb Use
Activity
(10-13
min)
In this activity, you will practice using common collocations with the verbs “to
do,” “to make,” and “to pay” and you will practice using the Past Progressive and
Past Perfect tenses. Participants may refer to the Verb Tense chart and the
collocations chart (included on the next page) while doing this assignment.
1. For three minutes, all group members will plan what they will say for this
activity. Each person will describe an experience they have had in the past.
To do this, each participant will use at least two of the collocations listed in
the English Exercises. The collocations in the chart are written in the
present tense, but you may need to change them to the past tense.
2. After three minutes, the first person will tell their story while others listen.
3. Those listening will respond to the story teller by sharing their thoughts
about their experiences. Also, group members will give feedback on the
use of the collocations or verb tenses.
4. Then, the next person will tell their story while the others listen.
Math
Exercise
3.3 Part B
(25-30 min)
Work through the problems in Math Exercise 3.3 Part B. (Do at least 1 of each
type of problem. Then, if time, go back and complete the rest of the
assignment.) Rotate the responsibility to explain how to do each problem
through the group. If a participant doesn’t know how to do a problem when it is
their turn, they should explain as much as possible and then the rest of the
group should help finish the problem. Then, the participant should explain how
to solve the problem back to the group.

Conclusion
(2 min)
1. Review the concepts that were taught this week. Make sure that everyone
understands "Exponents." Many new concepts were introduced this week. Help one
another if necessary.
2. Review for the exam. Ask the participants if there are any concepts that anyone wants
to review or questions since the last exam. Discuss these concepts or answers to
questions to make sure everyone feels prepared for the exam.
As appropriate, bear your testimony as it pertains to this lesson, this course,
or your experiences with the math or personal finance concepts you have
learned.
