Dear Friends,
Dear Friends,
Part I of the Constitution of the PC(USA) is entitled The Book of
Confessions. The newest edition is 1 3/16 inches thick and includes
statements of faith written from 325AD through 1983AD. Trying to “believe”
everything in this long, often contradictory collection would be like ordering
everything on the Cracker Barrel menu and expecting to maintain your weight
and stay gluten free.
There is blessing in the bother, though. Most of these documents grew
out of 2000 years of ecclesiastical conflict and change. Trying experiences
usually force us to examine our faith and to reimagine what we hear God
calling us to be and do. Rather than confining us to immutable dogma, the
confessions invite us into conversation with the lively and organic mystery of
God’s ceaseless activity in and for Creation. Getting things “right” is not the
point. Self-examination, spiritual curiosity, and willingness to grow are the
point.
The Confession of 1967 offers a good example. Amid the cultural and
political tumult of 1960’s, the Presbyterian Church challenged itself to take
seriously Jesus’ call to live as a reconciling community in a society agonizing
with racial unrest, an unpopular war, shifting sexual mores, and general
cultural instability. I find this confession particularly relevant today as, once
again, we stand in need of new forgiveness and new vision.
A merciless and divisive campaign season may have ended with this month’s
elections, but much of the fear and resentment remain. As the Church, we now
have an urgent calling to renew our commitment to reconciliation and peace.
And our journey begins with confession. Confession includes but is far more
than simply admitting faults and failures. Authentic confession happens when
claim our God-given giftedness and potential, and devote ourselves to
experiencing and sharing God’s Love in and for the world.
With the voting machines packed away, we name and own our collective
failure to live as a people of grace. Moving on, we boldly stand up straight,
confessing without reservation or apology, that all human beings are children
of God, and that we as Jesus-followers will strive to choose, each moment of
each day, to live beyond the confines of fear, prejudice, and hate.
“To be reconciled to God is to be sent into the world as God’s
reconciling community,…and [sharing] God’s labor of healing the enmities
which separate people from God and from each other…With an urgency born
of this hope, the church applies itself to present tasks and strives for a better
world. It does not identify limited progress with the kingdom of God on earth,
nor does it despair in the face of disappointment and defeat. In steadfast hope,
the church looks…to the final triumph of God.” (The Confession of 1967,
excerpts from 9.31 and 9.55)
Peace,
Pastor Allen

Health and Wellness for November
The Great American Smokeout November 17
Quit for you and everyone who cares for you.
Within minutes of smoking your last cigarette, your body begins to recover:
20 minutes after quitting
* Your heart rate and blood pressure drop.
12 hours after quitting
* The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
2 weeks to 3 months after quitting * Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.
1 to 9 months after quitting
*Coughing and shortness of breath decrease.
Tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs
(called cilia) start to regain normal function in your lungs,
increasing their ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and
reduce the risk of infection.
1 year after quitting
*The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of
someone who still smokes. Your heart attack risk drops
dramatically.
5 years after quitting
* Your risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus,
and bladder is cut in half. Cervical cancer risk falls to that of a
non-smoker. Your stroke risk can fall to that of a non-smoker after
2 to 5 years.
10 years after quitting
* Your risk of dying from lung cancer is about half that of
a person who is still smoking. Your risk of cancer of the larynx
(voice box) and pancreas decreases.
15 years after quitting
* Your risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker’s.
