Rock That Quilt Block
BLUE RIBBON PAVILION
Join Linda Hahn for an evening of fun as she takes
us through her lecture “ Rock that Quilt Block!“ So
how do you “rock” a quilt block? Let’s count the
ways!!! Linda’s concept can be applied to most any
quilt block! You can change the “flavor” of the block
by simply rotating a patch, adding a color or dividing
a patch. Linda’s extensive trunk show shows what
happens when you play! Sometimes you turn an
oops into an ahhh! - then... make several of the same
block and put them together for surprise secondary
and tertiary patterns! It’s amazing what happens
when you relax and allow yourself to play! You’ll
leave this lecture ready to rock your favorite block!!

About Vermont Quilt Festival
The Vermont Quilt Festival, New England’s largest and
oldest quilt event, was founded in 1977 as a one-day
show of old and new quilts as a part of Northfield’s
annual Labor Day weekend celebration. Over the last
40 years, it has added classes, quilt appraisals and the
Vendor Mall, and now takes place at the Champlain
Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. From its inception, the Festival has displayed quilts from private
owners and loans from the collections of historical
societies and the renowned Shelburne Museum. The
Festival also initiated the Vermont Quiltsearch, which
documents antique Vermont quilts and their makers
and resulted in the book, Plain and Fancy: Vermont’s
People and Their Quilts, by Donna Bister and Richard L.
Cleveland.

Quilt photos taken at the Festival are for your personal
enjoyment only. Photos may never be used for commercial purposes. Any photos posted to your personal
website must include appropriate credit for each quilt
artist, including where and when the photos were
taken. Photos of special exhibits are allowed unless
signs at the individual exhibits indicate otherwise.
Please be responsible in your use of quilt photographs
and help us protect the rights of the quiltmakers and
others. Please consult vendors before photographing
their booths.

Contest Quilts, Antique Quilts,
and Special Exhibits
Quilt shows are all about the quilts, and over the last 40 years the Festival has presented thousands
of the best new and old quilts from the United States and around the world. The seven separate
exhibits provide viewers with a grand cross-section of the quiltmaker’s art, past and present.
Quilt Contest
Stars, Stars, Stars!
MILLER SOUTH
Sharon Waddell, Curator
MILLER NORTH
The VQF Contest is an annual challenge to quilters
from around the world to produce their best
work. The exhibit inspires, astonishes and delights
with its breadth and depth of color, design and
creativity. Our theme for this year is “Colors of the
Season”. Be sure to check out our young quilters
exhibit; you will be amazed with their talent.
Crop Circles and Other Creations
Joanne Shapp, Curator
MILLER NORTH
Since early times the star motif has been a favorite
symbol in arts and crafts. They are one of the first
symbols used and remain popular today. Found in
both traditional and more modern quilts the variety
is almost endless; patterns include Lone Star, Broken
Star, LeMoyne Star, Ohio Star, Blazing Star, Prairie
Star, and Starburst. This selection of fifty quilts from
the early 1800s to the 1930s celebrates the incredible diversity and beauty of star quilts.
In January 2005, a single DVD totally changed
Joanne’s life. She was exposed to the Crop Circle
phenomena. Within the first 10 minutes she fell in
love and knew she had to make quilts based on
these stunning and enigmatic patterns. She has
been to England several times and has actually
been in over 75 formations. Several of her quilts
are based on Circles she has been in. Each pattern
is hand drawn using arial photos taken by friends.
She does not use computers for either the design
or the quilting. Construction techniques include
piecing by hand and machine, paper piecing, hand
applique’ and reverse applique’. Green and tan
are now her favorite colors, and she looks forward
to exciting new patterns every summer!
Lobby Lights: Vermont Modern Quilt Guild
Life’s Work: Katie Pasquini Masopust
For four decades we have displayed the high caliber
of work our instructors bring to our class offerings.
This year we again have a broad array of talent.
These instructors have chosen to display their work
so you may get an up close view of what they share
with our students. The display shows the diversity of
quilt-making traditions.
Katie Pasquini Masopust, Curator
MILLER NORTH
In a thirty-five + year career, Katie Pasquini
Masopust has developed an extraordinary body of
art exploring applique and piecing of unique-found
fabrics to create original works. Her inspirations
come from many sources but most commonly from
photographs of landscapes, flowers and architecture and from her own original paintings. Katie
uses found fabrics either commercially produced or
dyed from others. Her quilts are included in many
private and museum collections. This will be the
largest exhibit ever of Katie’s work.
Quilts by Vermont Modern Quilt Guild
MILLER CENTRE LOBBY
Each year the Lobby Lights exhibit showcases the
work of an individual or group. This year, we are
pleased to announce that the Vermont Modern
Quilt Guild will fly their bold, colorful, and graphic
quilts above the lobby in between the Miller North
and South buildings. In addition there will be an
informative display about this Guild and modern
quilting. Stop by and see the exciting activities and
learn what modern quilting is all about. Visitors
should look up and be inspired.

The top for this fun nine-block wall hanging (approximately 18” x 26”) can be completed in a day. The slashing technique can be simple, or
made more complex by adding a third or fourth “stick” in each block. Or, you may decide to piece the “sticks” to add interest. The pictured
quilt was made with all solid fabrics, but a different look will be achieved by using prints. It’s your choice! This is very much an exercise in
letting go of precision piecing! It helps if participants bring a sense of play. This workshop is meant to be FUN!

This workshop is about learning to play with light and shadow in a 3D mural. No need to know how to draw, the use of a printed panel and
assorted fabrics create the artistic part. Open to all enthusiast quilters.
105
Do you love to make mystery quilts? Or does the thought of choosing fabrics and making a quilt for which you have no idea what the end result
will be scare you? Fear not! Whether you are a seasoned veteran and you enjoy the intrigue and suspense of not knowing the final outcome, or if
you have never had the courage to tackle making a mystery quilt before, Kimberly’s ultra-popular mystery quilt classes and patterns are perfect for
you! She has designed the entire process to be simple, fun, and stress-free, so you can take as much risk as you like with your fabric selections or
risk nothing at all. Step out of your “color comfort zone” and try something new. The rule of thumb is this: if your fabrics have good contrast, look
great when lined up together, and match the values given in the fabric requirements table, then they’ll look beautiful when sewn together. These
classes are suitable for any quilter with some rotary cutting and machine piecing experience and guaranteed to be fabulous and fun!

Cardinals have stuffing beneath for shaping, and double-layered wings, hinged at the shoulder for dimension. Hand-dyed wool thread is
used throughout and is accented in the variegated pine needles. Snowflakes stitched from metallic thread, can be substituted in place of the
mistletoe for a more “winter” mat. Lessons include using freezer paper for patterns, stitching “flat to the table” with no fusibles, and embroidery stitches (blanket stitch, back stitch, stem stitch). A great introductory class for dimensional wool applique!

Snail’s Trail quilts are among those bucket list quilts. But wait no longer! This quilt uses Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design’s latest tool the Large
Square Squared, and the Studio 180 Diamond Rects. No paper piecing! Michelle designed this modern play on Snail’s Trail quilt layout in honor of a longtime friendship. Both Michelle and Jenn love the positive and negative aspects of this design. Michelle’s twin size layout makes
excellent use of those 1-yard fabric cuts you have been collecting. It comes together with ease using Studio 180 Design’s Diamond Rects and
the NEW Large Square Squared. Three size selections available (Throw, Twin and Queen.) The class will include step-by-step use for both tools,
as well as tips on piecing and proper pressing techniques to make this quilt perfect! Additionally, we will talk through the appropriate border
prep and application and ways to improve your general machine piecing. You will complete this journey with ease.

Chickens have often found their way into the quilt world — small wonder given the astonishing variety of plumage in chicken breeds.
Among the most memorable poultry quilts are the charming chickens and roosters (and turkeys and ducks) created by Ruth McDowell
(www.ruthbmcdowell.com). Join us in poultry piecing to celebrate these barnyard wonders! In this class, you will select from several
patterns to create your chicken wallhanging. A brief discussion introduces the methods and techniques of freezer paper templates. You

Paper piecing using a large template has its challenges but is so worth it, especially when you add intentionally pieced stripes into the mix!
Paper piecing with larger pieces of fabric is in many ways more difficult than paper piecing with small pieces that are more easily handled.
Come, learn some new tricks to make large scale paper piecing work while also learning how place your fabric intentionally to enhance the
pattern design. Explore various layouts for a unique quilt top.

Michelle designed this quilt for Modern 180, Studio 180 Design’s Modern Pattern line. Amusement is a fun and quirky quilt inspired by the
ferris wheels found on the amusement piers in New Jersey, where Michelle grew up. This pattern is made using Studio 180 Design’s Tucker
Trimmer® I, Wing Clipper® I and the Corner Pop® tools. Make this fabulous design without paper piecing! You will use yardage for the
background and accent (green), and for each Ferris Wheel you will use 3 values of one color. So, for example, if you decide to use red for one
block, you’ll need a light red, a medium red, and a dark red. It’s up to you to decide how many different color Ferris Wheels you have in your
quilt. Pattern offers Wall (4 Blocks), Throw (9 Blocks) and Twin (12 Blocks) sizes. The class will include step-by-step use for all three tools, as
well as additional examples of how to use the Studio 180 Tools to make your quilting life easier. Plus, tons of tips on matching points, squaring up your blocks and general machine piecing tips and tricks. So delightful!

outcome, or if you have never had the courage to tackle making a mystery quilt before, Kimberly’s ultra-popular mystery quilt classes and
patterns are perfect for you! She has designed the entire process to be simple, fun, and stress-free, so you can take as much risk as you like
with your fabric selections, or risk nothing at all. Step out of your “color comfort zone” and try something new. The rule of thumb is this: if
your fabrics have good contrast, look great when lined up together, and match the values given in the fabric requirements table, then they’ll
look beautiful when sewn together. These classes are suitable for any quilter with some rotary cutting and machine piecing experience, and
guaranteed to be fabulous and fun!

This project is excerpted from a larger one, with five daylily varietals, with a focus on completing it into a pillow or framed artwork. Finishing
details will be discussed. Leaves are different values of wool, to add depth, and one is stitched dimensionally. Sepals are stitched flat, while
petals are stitched to lift from the background and curl, like a real flower. Hand-dyed thread is accented in the density of stitching around
the flower’s edges. Lessons include using freezer paper for patterns, stitching “flat to the table” with no fusibles, and embroidery stitches
(blanket, back, satin).

Storm at Sea quilts are among those bucket list quilts. But wait no longer! This quilt uses Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design’s latest tool, the Studio
180 Designs’s Large Square Squared, V Block and the Studio 180 Diamond Rects. No paper piecing! Michelle’s design puts a modern spin on the
typical Storm at Sea quilt layout. Michelle used 12 graduating colors which gives it that calm, smooth feeling. This quilt works great with Solid,
Tone on Tone or Batik fabric. Patten includes 3 size options (Throw, Twin or King) and you will be amazed how easily this quilt comes together
with the right tools! Learn how to use Deb Tucker’s latest Large Square Squared™, V Block and Diamond Rects™ as you make this fabulous
quilt. The class will include step-by-step instructions for all the tools, as well as tips on piecing and proper pressing techniques to make this quilt

Learn a great technique for making pieced border strips, modern strip quilt, etc. A great looking pieced strip that can be used for borders or rows.
This difficult looking design is actually made from a technique developed more than 20+ years ago by Georgia Bonesteel, however made simple
with Deb Tucker’s fabulous technique. It is constructed from squares and uses precision machine piecework. In class you’ll be working on making
a sample row or two to become familiar with the process and then see a number of samples for future project planning. Hints and tips to help improve the required precision piecing techniques will be addressed and shared as well as steps for how to adapt the border to numerous other size
options. Depending on what you want to do with your class work product, you may want to put aside additional coordinating fabric for post class.
For pictured quilt, I used 2½ Yards of focus fabric, 2½ Yards of background fabric, and a good portion of 12 Fat Quarters. Measures 48” x 48”!
