The Readings
First Reading from 1 KINGS 17:8-16 (17-24)
⁸Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ⁹“Go now to
Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have
commanded a widow there to feed you.” ¹ºSo he set out and
went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a
widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said,
“Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” ¹¹As
she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring
me a morsel of bread in your hand.” ¹²But she said, “As the
Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of
meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a
couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for
myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” ¹³Elijah said
to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but
first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and
afterwards make something for yourself and your son. ¹⁴For
thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not
be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the
Lord sends rain on the earth.” ¹⁵She went and did as Elijah
said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for
many days. ¹⁶The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did
the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he
spoke by Elijah.
[¹⁷After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house,
became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no
breath left in him. ¹⁸She then said to Elijah, “What have you
against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring
my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!”
¹⁹But he said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him from
her bosom, carried him up into the upper chamber where he
was lodging⁸, and laid him on his own bed. ²ºHe cried out to
the Lord, “O Lord my God, have you brought calamity even
upon the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?”
²¹Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, let this child’s life
come into him again.” ²²The Lord listened to the voice of
Elijah; the life of the child came into him again, and he
revived. ²³Elijah took the child, brought him down from the
upper chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother;
then Elijah said, “See, your son is alive.” ²⁴So the woman
said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and
that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”]
PSALM 146
Praise the Lord, O my soul; while I live will I praise the Lord:
Yea, as long as I have any being, I will sing
praises unto my God.
O put not your trust in princes nor in any child of man;
For there is no help in them.
For when the breath of man goeth forth, he shall turn again
to his earth;
And then all his thoughts perish.
Blessed is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help,
And whose hope is in the Lord his God;
Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that therein is;
Who keepeth his promise for ever;
Who helpeth them to right that suffer wrong;
Who feedeth the hungry.
The Lord looseth men out of prison;
The Lord giveth sight to the blind.
The Lord raiseth up them that are fallen;
The Lord loveth the righteous.
The Lord careth for the strangers; he upholdeth the
fatherless and widow;
As for the way of the ungodly, he turneth it upside
down.
The Lord thy God, O Sion, shall be King for evermore,
And throughout all generations.
Second Reading from GALATIANS 1:11-24
¹¹For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the
gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin¹²for
I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it,
but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. ¹³You
have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I was
violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to
destroy it. ¹⁴I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my
people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the
traditions of my ancestors. ¹⁵But when God, who had set me
apart before I was born and called me through his grace,
was pleased ¹⁶to reveal his Son to me, so that I might
proclaim him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with any
human being, ¹⁷nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who
were already apostles before me, but I went away at once
into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus. ¹⁸Then
after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas
and stayed with him fifteen days; ¹⁹but I did not see any
other apostle except James the Lord’s brother. ²ºIn what I
am writing to you, before God, I do not lie! ²¹Then I went into
the regions of Syria and Cilicia, ²²and I was still unknown by
sight to the churches of Judea that are in Christ; ²³they only
heard it said, “The one who formerly was persecuting us is
now proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy.” ²⁴And
they glorified God because of me.
Here O My Lord
Rev. H. Bonar
Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face;
Here faith can touch and handle things unseen;
Here would I grasp with firmer hand thy grace,
And all my weariness upon thee lean.
Here would I feed upon the Bread of God;
Here drink with thee the royal Wine of heaven;
Here would I lay aside each earthly load,
Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven.
I have no help but thine; nor do I need
Another arm save thine to lean upon;
It is enough, my Lord, enough indeed;
My strength is in thy might, thy might alone.
Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness;
Mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing Blood;
Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace –
Thy Blood, thy righteousness, O Lord, my God!

THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHIRST
ACCORDING TO LUKE 7:11-17
¹¹Soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, and his
disciples and a large crowd went with him. ¹²As he
approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was
being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was
a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town.
¹³When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said
to her, “Do not weep.” ¹⁴Then he came forward and touched
the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man,
I say to you, rise!” ¹⁵The dead man sat up and began to speak,
and Jesus gave him to his mother. ¹⁶Fear seized all of them;
and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen
among us!” and “God has looked favourably on his people!”
¹⁷This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the
surrounding country.

The Message—The Reverend Oz Lorentzen
O For a Closer Walk
William Couper
O for a closer walk with God,
A calm and heavenly frame;
A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!
What peaceful hours I once enjoyed!
How sweet their memory still!
But they have left an aching void
The world can never fill.
Return, O holy Dove, return,
Sweet messenger of rest:
I hate the sins that made thee mourn,
And drove thee from my breast.
The dearest idol I have known,
Whate’er that idol be,
Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only thee.
So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;
So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.
