oil seeds for energetic use
Maschinenfabrik Reinartz GmbH & Co. KG
Innovative Technology for Tomorrow`s Fuels
Maschinenfabrik Reinartz, established in 1853,
one of the oldest companies in the harbour and industrial
town of Neuss on the river Rhine
Reinartz specializes in development and manufacturing of
facilities for the extraction of oil.
Concentrating on small and medium sized cold pressing
Reinartz is market leader for cold presses in Europe.
Reinartz presses are operated in Switzerland, Italy, France,
South Africa, Malawi, India, Japan, Brasil, Chile, and many
more countries worldwide
Reinartz‘ know-how is applied to many high-quality products
for foodstuff, cosmetic products or biofuel

Maschinenfabrik Reinartz GmbH & Co. KG
Necessary investments for a decentralized oil mill
Infrastructure
Site for the oil mill plant within a town or even village
Required machinery:
Seed cleaning machine, screw press, filter, conveying
elements, tanks for crude and filtered oil, electric control
Trained personnel for operating the plant – ideally in three shifts
One skilled mechanic from time to time for maintenance work
Commodities
Reliable supply of electricity 24 hours / day ( if possible)
Alternatively or additionally power generation plant
Eventually power generator operated with pure plant oil
Maschinenfabrik Reinartz GmbH & Co. KG
Function of a decentralized oil mill
seed delivered from local farmers is weighed (for payment)
stored safe from mice etc.
before processing seed is cleaned, i.e. sand, stones and metal
particles are removed
seed is conveyed into the screw press with an adjustable
dosing screw
seed is pressed in the screw press
oil is collected in a crude oil tank underneath the press
press cake is either collected in a separate bin or moved to
a cake store with a conveyer belt
crude oil is cleaned in a filter press before storing
Maschinenfabrik Reinartz GmbH & Co. KG
Selling oil and press cake
filtered oil is either bottled or filled into containers
as per customers‘ requirements
depending on the type of oil seed the oil is sold for human
consumption, for cosmetic or technical purposes
press cake is either kept in an open cake store and sold
in truck loads or filled into bags
as per customers‘ requirements
depending on the type of oil seed the press cake is sold as
base product for human food, as animal feed, as fertilizer
or to bio mass power plants
Jatropha
Jatropha
Uncomplicated Energy Supplier
The Jatropha plant (Barbados nut or Jatropha curcas)
grows on eroded soil which is low in nutrients and, therefore,
unsuitable for agricultural use
Jatropha is able to serve as a stabilising influence on soil
which is exposed to erosion
Jatropha is relatively undemanding and can endure
long periods of drought, temperatures above 40º Celsius,
slight frost and is, on the whole, uncomplicated and adaptable
Jatropha grows very rapidly, contains high oil content
(25% to 35%) and can supply crude oil for 30 years
Jatropha
Pressing of Jatropha Seed
Jatropha seed is easy to process in screw presses
Jatropha seed is toxic – employees should protect
themselves against Jatropha vapours by carrying a mask
Jatropha oil is blended with fossil diesel to produce biodiesel
Or with paraffin as illuminating oil
Jatropha press cake is ideal for biomass power plants
or as fertilizer
Jatropha
Quality of seed
High seed quality is prerequisite for high quality oil
Jatropha seed has to be ripe
during storage seed must not be exposed to sun
during storage seed should be ventilated
Jatropha seed should not contain too many broken seeds
Jatropha seed should not contain much spelts, straws, etc.
Jatropha
Critical elements in the seed
Phosphorus
Plant oils contain phosphorus as phospholipids
Kind of mucin causing streaks in the oil
Effects
Phosphore reduces combustion temperature in the motor
Phosphore may lead to sediment deposits
Phosphore might effect motor emissions
Phosphore might reduce oxidation stability
Phospholipids may swell in water and thus block the filter
Jatropha
Critical elements in the seed
Calcium and Magnesium
Calcium and Magnesium are also natural components of
plant oils
Effects
Calcium and Magnesium may lead to sediment deposits
Calcium and Magnesium are ash creating components
- the soot filter may clog
Jatropha
Measures
Blending the Jatropha oil with fossil diesel or paraffin
Using the Jatropha oil in combustion engines that are
designed for pure plant oil (e.g. power generators)
Treating the Jatropha oil with special filtering aids to reduce
Phosphore, calcium and magnesium content

CompacTropha®
consisting of two 20‘ containers with large side doors
- Container one houses a pressing plant
consisting of screw press(es), crude oil tank
and frame filter press
- Container two houses a power generating unit
driven with filtered Jatropha oil
Surplus electricity not required for container 1 is used
for supplying the village with electricity
