Abstract:
Students will identify all service people from Ruskin who served in WWI. They
will learn how to read the biographical information on the cards to understand how each
military member served their country. Students will relate this to their own family and
friends. They will create displays to honor these WWI veterans.
Materials:
-Copies of service cards for all 12 from Ruskin who served in World War I (1 card per
pair of students) online images can be downloaded and printed at
WWW.RuskinHistory.org or from this lesson file
-1 sheet of 12’ x 18’ construction paper for each pair of students
-1 Ruskin Veteran Graphic Organizer per pair of students
-1 copy of Ruskin Hero Star for each student pair

Lesson Outline:

Ask class if they have any family members who are currently serving in any
branch of the military or have done so. Discuss what branch, where they are
stationed, their rank, etc.
Inform students they are about to become historians. They are going to
research Ruskin residents who served in WW I nearly 100 years ago.
Arrange students into pairs.
Distribute a copy of the service card for the same person to each pair of
students or project it onto a screen.
Explain the type of information it contains and what the abbreviations mean.
Distribute copies of service cards of different Ruskin WWI veterans to student
pairs.

Distribute 1 Ruskin Veteran Graphic Organizer to each pair of students.
Student partners should read the service cards to learn about their assigned
service person and complete the Ruskin Veteran Graphic Organizer.
Have students share what they learned about the service person they studied
such as their hometown, date of birth, what branch of the service they were in,
etc.
Student pairs should write a paragraph about the veteran they are studying and
explain what makes them a hero.
Teacher edits and passes back student work.
Distribute Ruskin Hero Stars.
Students rewrite paragraph onto the Ruskin Hero Star and include the
information onto each point of the star.
Each service person’s service card and star can be mounted onto construction
paper and displayed in the classroom or in the school particularly during
Veterans Day or Memorial Day.
Extensions:
-Research other Ruskin service men and women. Possible sources are the Florida State
Archives and the Florida Memory Project.
-Invite Ruskin veterans to speak with the class.
-Establish pen pals with members of the military at home or overseas.
