An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, which can be violent enough to
destroy major buildings and kill thousands of people. Earthquakes are caused mostly by
geological faults, but may also be the result of volcanoes, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear
tests.
The strength of the earthquake is usually measured on the Richter scale. Earthquakes which
mark a magnitude of 3 on this scale are weak. Anything over a magnitude 7 will probably
cause serious damage over larger areas.
The largest earthquakes ever recorded have been of a magnitude slightly over 9, although
there is no limit to this. The most recent large earthquake of this size was in Japan in 2011,
leaving thousands dead, injured or homeless. 4.4 million houses were left without electricity
or water. It was the largest Japanese earthquake recorded and the most difficult crisis to hit
the country since World War II.
Earthquakes may also take place at sea. Here, the seabed may be moved enough to create a
tsunami, which is an enormous tidal wave. One of the most devastating tsunamis was that of
the Indian Ocean in 2004. This left 150,000 people dead and millions homeless across 11
countries.
Nowadays, numerous tsunami warning systems have been installed in high-risk areas. The
Tsunami Warning System is one of these. People may subscribe to this alarm system for free.
It works by calling the subscriber hours in advance to warn them of a possible tsunami. This
allows for people to evacuate safely, with no loss of life.

“Kraken” is an old word used to describe giant sea
creatures that sailors said that they had seen. These
creatures are shaped like squid or octopuses, with
many arms that could pull men from ships, and even
drag whole boats to the bottom of the sea.
This creature was first discovered in 1873 by
fishermen. Two men and a boy were fishing in a
rowing boat off the coast of Newfoundland, when one of the men saw a pile of wreckage.
Suddenly, the “wreckage” moved. It was an enormous sea monster. Two of its tentacles shot out
to grab the little boat.
The creature began to pull the boat beneath the water. As the sea flooded around them, the
courageous boy grabbed an axe and cut the tentacles. The monster released a jet of black ink and
disappeared.
The fishermen reached the shore unharmed and took a piece of tentacle to show to a local
naturalist called Moses Harvey. He was amazed by the specimen, which was very tough and six
metres long.
A month later, four other men brought Harvey a similar creature. They had found the creature in
one of their nets. They attacked it until one of them killed it.

Moses Harvey bought the creature from the fishermen for ten dollars. He took several
photographs of it and sent them off to London. The scientists who examined it said that it was a
giant squid- one of the largest ever found. They called this giant sea creature “Kraken”.
In 1887, another giant squid was found, this time in New Zealand. Its body measured about 3
metres, and its tentacles were another 13 metres long. As recently as 1964, an 11-metre squid
was found in the sea near La Coruna, in Spain.
Although many of the stories are exaggerated, and were once thought to be only legends, there is
now proof that giant squid do exist. Parts of squid and even whole bodies of huge size have been
found. They have been examined by experts in many different parts of the world

Emma bit her lip nervously. She had just stepped off the bus, and had noticed someone who was
already on the sidewalk. Samuel. Samuel was a bully, and everyone knew he would pick on you the
moment he saw you. Then Emma froze. Samuel was staring right at her. Emma prepared for what
would surely come.
“Hey, Book Girl!” Samuel sneered, and his friends laughed.
Emma’s face turned beet red. She knew that “Book Girl” wasn’t really an insult, but it still hurt.
Emma usually had her nose in a book, whether she was walking to class or riding the bus home.
There were other kids on the bus, watching the scene play out, but they did nothing to stop
Samuel’s bullying. Emma suspected that they were worried that Samuel would pick on them if they
interfered.
“That isn’t even an insult!” Emma said in protest, but even she could hear her voice wobble and
crack.
“If you don’t care about being a book girl, then do you care if I do this?” Samuel grabbed Emma’s
book and darted back to his friends before Emma even knew what happened.
Tears threatened to spill out of Emma’s eyes, and she tried not to cry. The book that Samuel stole, A
Christmas Miracle, was Emma’s favourite book. She always read it in the days before Christmas
break. Would Samuel give it back?
