Stability
Preventol® BZT has excellent thermal stability and is stable at normal application temperatures. If the
pure substance is heated, it should be noted that benzotriazole decomposes exothermically above
160 °C (differential thermoanalysis).
Storage
If correctly stored and kept in the original sealed package, the shelf life is 1 year. Preventol® BZT tends
to form lumps, particularly in containers which have already been opened.
Effect and application
Effect:
Preventol® BZT prevents corrosive attack on copper and its alloys.
Preventol® BZT also inhibits the corrosion of steel, cast iron, cadmium and nickel alloys under certain
conditions.
Preventol® BZT also reduces the corrosive influence of copper ions on various metals.
Preventol® BZT can be combined with other corrosion inhibitors and increases their effectiveness.
Preventol® BZT inhibits the decomposition of fluids containing oil, alcohol or glycol, which is catalyzed
by copper ions.

PREVENTOL® BZT
Preventol® BZT prevents corrosion, especially of copper and copper alloys, by forming an extremely
thin, stable protective film on the metal surface. Because the film is smooth, non-greasy and
colourless, the original appearance of the metals is retained, and as it is very thin, the heat exchange
between the metal and heat transfer medium is not impaired.
Preventol® BZT is chemically bonded to the metal and provides longlasting protection. The dissolution
of copper and the associated transfer of copper ions, e.g. in cooling water, hydraulic fluids or
emulsions, are prevented. Through its passivating effect Preventol ® BZT suppresses the
corrosion-promoting influence of copper ions on baser metals, such as aluminium and iron. Copper
ions in cooling water may cause pitting on base metals.
Adding Preventol® BZT to circulation water also prevents catalytic degradation of rubber hosing or
rubber seals in the cooling system by copper ions.
Glycols are frequently added to cooling water as antifreeze. Copper ions catalyze the oxidation of
glycol to acids, which cause severe corrosion. Preventol ® BZT prevents these oxidation processes.
Preventol® BZT can be combined with other corrosion inhibitors, such as sodium benzoate, borax,
silicate, nitrite, nitrate, molybdate, phosphate and organic phosphorus compounds, and increases their
effectiveness.
Application:
Copper corrosion and copper ions in technical products cause a wide variety of problems. Copper and
copper alloys corrode and become discoloured, and their service value is impaired. Copper ions go
into solution and get into chemical products, formulations and functional fluids. In the presence of
copper ions the breakdown of products such as lubricoolants, antifreezes, hydraulic fluids, brake
fluids, oil-based media and rubber is catalyzed. Copper ions can also cause pitting on metals such as
aluminium, zinc, iron and steel.
Problems of this kind can be avoided by using Preventol® BZT. The dissolution of copper and the
formation of copper ions are prevented. The catalytic effects of copper ions are retarded.
Preventol® BZT is stable not only in neutral media, but also in strong mineral acids and alkalis.
Optimum effectiveness is in most cases achieved in the pH range between 2 and 10. Preventol ® BZT
has excellent thermal stability and is also effective at elevated temperatures.
Treatment with Preventol® BZT generally has no negative effect on the electrical properties of metal
surfaces. As Preventol ® BZT prevents corrosion, subsequent operations such as soldering, coating
and electrolytic processes are, in fact, made easier and more effective.

Precautions
When using Preventol® BZT the precautions generally recommended for handling chemicals should be
observed, e.g. wearing of safety goggles, protective gloves and protective clothing.
If the product comes into contact with skin, the affected area should be washed off immediately with
plenty of water and soap; splashes in the eyes should be rinsed out immediately with plenty of water.
If irritation persists, medical attention should be obtained. Soiled or soaking clothing should be
changed at once..
The current safety data sheet should be observed. This contains further information on
labelling, transport and storage as well as information on handling, product safety, toxicity and
ecology.
Labelling
This product information must be used in conjunction with section 15 of the currently valid safety data
sheet for the product which indicates labelling according to the German Hazardous Substances
Regulation and the corresponding EU Directive.
