Chapter 1 Test Wed. May 2nd
Sc7B
Student's Name___________________________________
PART ONE:
1. What are the products of neutralization reaction between an acid and a base?
Salt and water
2. Write a word equation to show how calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric
acid.
Calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide
3. Complete the word equation:
Hydrochloric acid + magnesium hydroxide --> magnesium chloride + water
4. Complete the word equation:
Hydrochloric acid + zinc hydroxide--> zinc chloride + water
5. Complete the word equation:
Sulfuric acid + calcium hydroxide --> calcium sulfate + water
6. Complete the word equation:
Sulfuric acid + sodium hydroxide --> sodium sulfate + water
7. What are the products of the reaction between a metal and an acid?
Salt and hydrogen
8. Complete the word equation:
Magnesium + sulfuric acid --> magnesium sulfate + hydrogen
9. Complete the word equation:
Zinc + hydrochloric acid --> zinc chloride + hydrogen
10.
Complete the word equation:
Iron + sulfuric acid --> iron sulfate + hydrogen
PART TWO:
11. What is an indicator? Explain what indicators are used for.
An indicator is a colored substance that shows you whether the solution you are testing is an acid,
an alkali or neutral.
12. Why would universal indicator be more useful than litmus if you were working in a food
technology laboratory?
Universal indicator is a mixture of indicators made from plants. Because it is a mixture of indicators
it can produce a range of colors and it can be more accurate in terms of how acidic or alkaline is a
food, whereas litmus paper would only give the information of acidic or alkaline nature of the food.
13. Describe three ways in which acid rain harms the environment.
 Poisons fish in lakes
 Damages leaves of trees
 Dissolves away buildings and statues made of limestone or marble
PART THREE: Circle True or False
