After WWI, America became isolationist and it did not embrace a role as a global leader.
In the interests of its own security, the United States should have used its enormous
strength to shape the world. It instead allowed Hitler to RISE TO POWER and the world
to drift towards another war.

1) How did some Republicans feel about the League of Nations? Why?
Some Republicans in America hated the League of Nations and
refused to approve the treaty. These difficulties helped Wilson's
Allied adversaries in Paris because they were given a stronger
bargaining position; Wilson would have to beg them for changes
in the treaty that would safeguard the Monroe Doctrine and other
American interests. They were unhappy (REPUBLICANS) about
allying with European Powers.
2) How did the German’s feel about the Treaty of Versailles? Do you
think it was more for “vengeance” or more for “reconciliation”?
The Treaty of Versailles was forced upon the Germans in June
1919. The Germans were outraged with the treaty, which spoke
more of vengeance than reconciliation. Most of the Fourteen
Points were left out of the treaty.
3) Why did Wilson compromise away most of his 14 points? What did
he want to be established (Hint: It was his 14th point!)?
Wilson compromised away some of his Fourteen Points in
attempts to salvage the League of Nations.
Critics of the League of Nations came from many different
political groups in America.
4) Why did Wilson go on multiple speaking tours and finally collapse
and have a stroke? In an attempt to speed up the passing of the
treaty in the Senate, President Wilson decided to give speeches
across the country to appeal to the public. The speeches had
mixed reactions. During the tour, Wilson was so stressed out and
angry he suffered a stroke. The US never joined the League of
Nations
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1315869/Germany-end-WorldWar-One-reparations-92-years-59m-final-payment.html
The Treaty of Versailles was designed mostly to punish Germany,
reflecting the bitter and vengeful feelings that Britain and France felt
towards their World War I enemy. It took away the German empire by
seizing its colonies, and it limited the German Army to a 100,000 man
security force. There would be no German navy or air force. The
Rhineland had to be demilitarized, and worst of all, Germany was
required to pay a $40 billion reparations bill to the Allies for starting the
war. No tanks or U-Boats allowed in Germany!
This bill wrecked the German economy in the 1920s and led to the
economic and political conditions that created Adolf Hitler.
