DID YOU KNOW THE YMCA
IS A NON-PROFIT CHARITY?
THE Y FOR ALL
Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors
to make sure that everyone, regardless of age,
income or background, has the opportunity to
learn, grow and thrive. When you are a part of the
YMCA you are helping to strengthen our community.
Through community support, we are able to open
doors not only for kids, but also for families, adults
and senior citizens by providing financial assistance
to those who are unable to afford the cost of
memberships, childcare and programs.

WALNUT STREET YMCA
The Walnut Street YMCA, located in
Downtown Wilmington, started the
Black Achievers program in 1989 to
provide college readiness and career
awareness to African-American
teens. The Black Achievers’ goal
is to encourage youth to develop
educational and career awareness with
the assistance and guidance of African
American mentors from diverse career
fields. Corporations, businesses and
the community nominate the Adult
Achievers because they succeeded
professionally and make a commitment
to serve as role models to the Teen
and Youth Black Achievers. The
annual awards ceremony recognizes
Adult Achievers and those Teen
Black Achievers who are eligible for
scholarships.
As of 2016, over 1,000 Adult
Achievers have been honored at the
annual banquet and they have, in
turn, served as role models to over
2,850 teen and youth Black Achievers.
The Black Achievers program meets
weekly throughout the year at the
Walnut Street YMCA. Through program
concentrations that include college,
professional and SAT preparation,
technology and engineering
exploration, arts and entertainment,
and media/communications, this
program helps youth raise their
academic standards, develop a positive
sense of self, build character, explore
diverse college and career options,
and learn from role models who inspire
them to greater heights.
The Walnut Street Y Black Achievers
Program involves over 200 YMCAs
nationally. Proudly, the Walnut Street
YMCA Black Achievers Program is
recognized as a Best Practice program
through the YMCA of the USA.

CATCH PROGRAM
The Coordinated Approach to Child Health
(CATCH) is a health program designed
to help children and their families adopt
healthy eating and physical activity
behaviors, and is a part of all YMCA After
School childcare programs.
• 17% of youth are at risk for
becoming overweight; poor eating
habits are a major cause.
• 77% of youth do not participate
in a sufficient amount of physical
activity; most kids spend too
much time watching TV and
playing video games.
THE YMCA OF DELAWARE CAN HELP!
• Nemours Health and Prevention
Services has partnered with the
YMCA of Delaware to deliver the
CATCH program to all YMCA after
school childcare sites.
• YMCA CATCH certified childcare
workers are trained to deliver this
program in a warm, caring environment.
• Our program is open until 7 p.m. to
accommodate parents’ work schedules.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE is available
and State Purchase of Care is accepted.
School vacation and in-service day care
are available for an additional cost.
