eLearning Class Descriptions 2016

eLearning
2017/2018 Course Descriptions
What is eLearning?
eLearning is when a student takes an online
class at FNSBSD.
●
●
●
●
Online classes are an online asynchronous (not
real-time) web-based environment with
reading, videos, discussions, assignments and
tests.
Students attend an eLearning lab at a high
school to complete the course.
Students can work at their own pace, in their
own place and on their own path.
Chromebooks are provided in the eLearning
labs.
Is eLearning for me?
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
●
●
●
●
●
●
Can I work and manage my time independently?
Do I like to work at my own pace?
Am I willing to practice good study skills?
Am I willing to work outside of school to complete my
reading and assignments?
Do I have good reading skills (at grade level) or am I
willing to use audio features to support my
understanding?
Can I utilize the technology skills necessary to
complete the course?

e-Learning FAQ’s Part I
●
●
●
●
When and where do I take this class?
○ Students take an eLearning class during the school day in the eLearning lab with a
facilitator.
Is eLearning hard?
○ Course content is from Apex Learning and is rigorous. Many courses involve a good
amount of reading. It is important to understand that these courses will take time and
devotion to complete. Students should plan on spending time outside of the school day
working on e-Learning courses.
Who will be my online teacher for my courses?
○ All courses have a highly qualified teachers from FNSBSD, except Mandarin, Latin and
German which have Apex Virtual Learning Teachers.
Who will be in the elearning classroom?
○ FNSBSD qualified teachers will support you in the eLearning classrooms to help you
complete your courses and answer questions you have with content or technology.
eLearning FAQ’s Part II
●
●
●
●
Will I be able to drop the class if I do not like it?
○ e-Learning courses will follow the same policy as any high school course. Students will
only be allowed to drop the course within the first 10 days without penalty.
How do I sign up for an eLearning course?
○ Choose the course and complete a course request form. Meet with a counselor to
complete the registration process.
Do I need Internet access at home or a personal computer?
○ Though these things are not needed, it is highly recommended that you have Internet
access availability and a device to complete work outside of school. Every eLearning
classroom has chromebooks available for students to use in the classroom.
How does Credit Recovery work?
○ Credit Recovery classes recover credit for a failed course. At the start of the course a
pretest is given to assess skills and knowledge. Based on the results, the student will be
given coursework for any material not learned. Amount of coursework required to
complete the course and receive credit will vary from student to student.

●
●
●
●

○ You will be offered the option to begin another eLearning course.
How do I get help from my online teacher?
○ Though your eFacilitator in your classroom will most often be able to help, you will be
able to contact your teacher through the Apex Message Center.
What if I do not finish the course in the semester?
○ You will work with your counselor to take an incomplete and create a plan for
completion within 10 days.
Do we use textbooks? Are there labs for science?
○ In some courses there are textbooks and your eFacilitator will provide them as needed.
All science classes have labs and students have the option to complete them as dry labs if
they are without materials, or full labs if the materials are available.
Are all courses APS approved?
○ No. Check with your counselor to see which courses qualify.
