Annual Appeal Issue 2016 The Village Voice WWW.VILLAGEOFHOPE.US FULL HOUSE A gathering of our Women and Children he Village of Hope is delighted to report to our friends in this special Annual Appeal edition of the Village Voice that all 15 of our apartments in the residential building are full. We are now providing quality case management, psychological counseling, trauma informed care and employment, education and job training assistance to the women enrolled in our two year Steps to Success Transitional Living program. To add to the excitement, the VOH and one of our newest residents welcomed baby Siyah in the early morning hours of September 6th and another resident is due in early 2017. T Of the 15 program participants; four are enrolled either full or part-time at Wor Wic Community College, three are pursuing their GED, twelve have secured full or part-time employment in our community and three are receiving job skills training. Many are both working and expanding their educational horizons. Our participants are taking full advantage of the program’s opportunities and are taking seriously the necessary steps to reach their goal of self-sufficiency. The 13 children ages two months to 14 years of age are attending day care, Headstart at the Judy Center or are enrolled at Chipman or Glen Avenue Elementary or Salisbury Middle Schools. As part of our “Empowering Children’s Project” the children receive on-site tutoring, mentoring, and psychological services. Tutoring provides student-specific activities and individualized plans with tailored exercises for their academic growth. Our Americorps member works closely with the Wicomico Board of Education tutor, parents and schools to be sure that each school-age child is achieving their grade level goals. This milestone comes with an even greater need to raise funds and garner support in order to sustain the programs and services required by each and every one of our program participants, their children and the staff resources required to operate the Village of Hope on a daily basis. Our goal is to continue to remain at maximum capacity in the months and years to come. That can only be realized with the help of our generous friends and funding agencies. VILLAGE OF HOPE BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2016-2017 Message from Board President Thomas J. Maloney President – Thomas J. Maloney, Esq. Vice-President – Patricia A. Dempsey Treasurer – James V. Fineran Assistant Treasurer – Steven B. Pusey, MBA Secretary – Jane R. Corcoran, CPA Assistant Secretary – Marilyn R. Bouchard, LSJM Past President – Donna Richardson DIRECTORS Michael E. Ryan Amy L. Taylor, Esq. Michele U. Thomas Marvin G. Tossey, PhD Thanks to our Board members for their generous donations of time, treasure and skills! Mother and Daughter Our Mission: To promote self-sufficiency and to improve the quality of life among at-risk women and children. Our Vision: To become the model organization for excellence in transitional housing for at-risk women and children within five years. Our Values: We have much to be thankful for in 2016. As always, we are grateful to our friends who generously give to our Annual Appeal at the end of the calendar year. That generosity, paired with the success of the Great Clue Caper in the early spring, gives the Village of Hope (VOH) the financial momentum early in the year to continue to meet the needs of our residents and their children. The second half of 2016 has ushered in many new and exciting changes for the VOH. In April, the VOH welcomed Ms. Carole McCall, LGSW as its fulltime Social Worker providing case management to our Transitional Living participants. She has done an excellent job of individualizing our program for each resident. Shortly after the beginning of our new fiscal year, we welcomed former Board member and president, Donna Richardson, as the new Executive Director of the VOH. Having served on the Board since 2010, Ms. Richardson was very familiar with the VOH and ready to assume the day to day leadership of the organization. Her past professional and management experience and vision for the VOH will position us well into the future. Both Ms. Richardson and Ms. McCall have been working collaboratively to insure the well-being and success of the women and children participating in the VOH’s Steps to Success program. That being said, I am very happy to report that for the first time in over ten years the VOH has reached 100% capacity as of September 1st. We are now providing programs and services to 15 women and 13 children. Our goal is to maintain maximum capacity from this point on so we can continue to meet our mission “to promote self-sufficiency and to improve the quality of life for at-risk women and children.” In addition to these accomplishments, both the Administration and Residential buildings have undergone major renovations and improvements. A new roof, interior and exterior paint, vinyl and carpet we added. Both buildings have been power washed, and many of the residential apartments were given a much needed face lift resulting in both buildings being more warm and welcoming. Needless to say, none of this would be possible without the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our Board members and other volunteers. It really does take a Village of Hope! Sincerely, Thomas J. Maloney, Esquire Intergrity, Compassion, Respect, Dignity, Diversity Page 2 A United Way Agency The Village Voice Annual Appeal Issue THE VILLAGE WELCOMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & SOCIAL WORKER Donna I. ERA Martin & Associates Page 6 The Village Voice Annual Appeal Issue SAVE THE DATE! For the seventh year, the Great Clue Caper took Wicomico County by storm as hundreds of participants tried to solve clues and outwit each other for the chance to win $2,000. The Clue Caper started in 2010 and has raised more than $350,000 for the Village of Hope. Each year, 50 teams sign up to participate in a game that involves puzzles and hilarious activities all around the county. It’s a race that takes brains, brawn and a little creative thinking. “We can’t thank our teams enough for participating,” said Jackie Jennings, Clue Caper creator. “They put their heart and soul into fundraising for us weeks before the event, and they certainly make the day exciting. And a huge thanks to all of the local companies who sponsor the Clue Caper, serve as clue locations and donate prizes. The Village is so lucky to have such a huge amount of support from the community.” Clue Caper Winners - Guardians of Salisbury This year, teams were challenged to a game of Frisbee tic-tac-toe, human “Hungry Hippos” and had to search for strategically placed signs from the top of a Salisbury parking garage. Clues were written in code, placed inside fortune cookies and hidden in Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. In the end, team “Guardians of Salisbury,” sponsored by Mountaire Farms, won the race. They took home $1,000 and donated $1,000 back to the Village of Hope. “The great thing about the Clue Caper is that anyone can participate,” added Jennings. “It’s great for company or non-profit team building and families can play together. Sometimes it’s the kids who solve the puzzles because they just think differently than adults do. Even if you don’t win, you certainly learn a lot about each other.” Donna Richardson, T.J Maloney recognize Clue Caper creatorJackie Jennings Look for the Clue Caper to return in April 2017. BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER Event Chairman Extraordinaire T. J. Maloney working the Crab Feast crowd Over 150 Village supporters gathered at the Lake Street Campus on July 23rd for a hugely successful revival of a Village tradition…the annual Crab Feast. After taking a break in 2015, the event raised over $9200 to support the women and children participating in our “Steps to Success” Transitional Living Program. Temperatures in the 90’s did not detract in the least from the fun and enjoyment of sharing great food and Maryland Blue Crabs with friends. An army of volunteers helped to make the Crab Feast a success but special thanks go to Village President T. J. Maloney and his large family and to Ron and Catherine Smoot-Haselnus for hosting the event and their tireless efforts on behalf of our cause. MAJOR REPAIRS AND CLEAN UP FOR BOTH BUILDINGS Thanks to a combination of grants for $61,274 from the Maryland Affordable Housing Trust, The City of Salisbury Community Block Grants Program and the Richard A. Henson Foundation, we were able to replace the shingles, guttering and downspouts on the Transitional Living Program 15-unit apartment building. This replaces the original roof which was over 25 years old. We are deeply grateful for the support given to make this much-needed improvement. Following extensive repairs resulting from an insurance settlement for a July, 2015, flood in the administration building, we were inspired to undertake an extensive clean-up and maintenance operation on both buildings in July and August. We have a great new look at the Village and we encourage you to let New Roof on Residential Building us take you on a tour.
