Key Boarding Kinetics Objectives: 1. The students will be able to perform a relay activity, along with different locomotor skills safely as a group. 2. The students will be able to use key boarding techniques to type grade specific spelling words on the laminated key board. 3. The students will be able to “spell” their word letter by letter by doing the assigned exercise that corresponds with each letter that is written on the Alphabet Exercise Sheet. 4. The (1st & 2nd) grade students will practice tying the “shoe lace tying” tool while waiting for their turn in line. Description of Activity: 1st- 2nd Grade The students will integrate key boarding skills needed to correctly type words on the laminated “key board”. This benefits the students by using the proper fingers to type the words. Students will need key boarding skills all throughout their student and adult lives. The students will also be working on the skills of shoe lace tying using the shoe lace tying tools in their line while waiting for their turn. The students will also benefit from doing the exercises that correlate with the words they are typing. This keeps the students physically active and makes them work together as a team. SOL’s: 1,2,3,4, &5 Lesson 1. Relay teams consisting of at least 4 students are sitting behind their cone that is lined up on the basketball sideline. (There should be enough room behind the team lines for the teams to be able to perform their team locomotor skill that is asked of them on the Alphabet Exercise sheet). There is a laminated “key board” and Frisbee next to the right side of their cone. In the center of the gym there are age appropriate spelling words facing word up on the floor. The first person in each relay skips to the center and picks up 1 age appropriate spelling word, skips back to their line and “types” the word on the laminated “key board”. The next person in line is doing any cross-lateral exercise while waiting for his/her turn and the other two students in line are practicing their shoe lace tying on the shoe lace tying tool. The student puts their foot on top of the stick with laces “open” They then tie the shoe lace over their own foot. The student unties and ties his/her shoe lace until it’s time for the team to do their Alphabet Exercise. *Make sure to tell the students that are using the shoe lace tying tool to make sure to untie the tool and put it back on the spot marker before proceeding with the Alphabet Exercise sheet. After the student types the word he/she says the word out loud which signals the rest of the team to get ready to use the Alphabet Exercise sheet to exercise spell the word. The team starts with the first letter of the word and all together they do the exercise that correlates with the first letter and then they all together do the second letter until the whole word is spelled. (Ex. CAP “c” team does 10 forward opposites-“a” team does 10 jumping jacks- “p” team does 10 trunk rolls.) After the word is “exercisly” spelled, they put the word in their Frisbee holder. The next person in line then goes and gets another word and they type it, then the whole team exercise spells the word…… *Make sure when the team is doing a locomotor lap around the gym, they move behind the groups. Formative Assessment: Are the students working together doing the exercises? Are the students actually using all their fingers, not just their pointer finger when typing the words? Are the students doing the actual number of the exercises? Rubric: Key Boarding Kinetics Relay Rubric Student just hunts and pecks with index finger to spell word There is no team unity or support doing the exercises The majority of the team are not following the rules and need to be reprimanded Student uses a combination of pecking and all finger typing The majority of the team stays in unity doing the exercises and there is some encouragement and support. The majority of the team follow the procedural and safety rules Student uses all fingers to type the word The whole team works together in unity doing the exercises with encouragement and support The whole team follows all the procedural and safety rules Equipment: Laminated grade level spelling words, and for each team you will need: 1 cone, 1 Frisbee, 1 laminated key board, 1 laminated alphabet exercise sheet, shoe lace tying tool, spot marker to put shoe tying tool on .
