TEXT COMPREHENSION
STORY OF DAEDALUS
In the day when King Minos ruled Crete, there lived in Athens a man named Daedalus. He was
famous because he was the greatest architect and sculptor of his time. There was nothing he could
not design with his hands.
His Young nephew, Talus, also had a creative mind and his mother sent him to Daedalus so that the
boy could learn his marvelous capacities. But Talushad his own genius and even more imagination.
He was so good that Daedalus felt frightened and jealous of someone who could become his rival, so
he came to hate the boy.
One day when they stood together on a high mountain, Daedalus pushed Talus and Talus died.
Daedalus was horrified what he had done, but it was too late: Talus was dead.
Daedalus escaped to Crete to sabe his life. When the King Minos heard that Daedalus was on his
island, he asked him to design a building where he could keep a creature called Minotaur. This was a
frightening monster that had the head and shoulders of a bull and the legs and trunk of a man, and
that ate the people who had been sentenced to dead by the King.
Daedalus built a labyrinth so complicated, that the monster and his victim could not scape. But
because only Daedalus could understand it, King Minos kept his prisoner on the island, so that he
would not reveal the secret of the labyrinth. Daedalus wanted to be free, so he studied the flight of the
birds, and made himself some wings with feathers and wax.
Daedalus tried the wings and they worked very well. When Icarus his son, saw him flying, he asked
his father to make him some. Daedalus did so and gave him instructions about how he should fly. He
told him not to fly too high or too low, for if he flew too high the sun would melt the wax and if he flew
too low, the sea would wet the wings. Then, they flew over the sea.
Daedalus flew with his son for some time and then, when he saw that Icarus had learned how to use
the wings, he left him alone. Icarus then became so excited about flying that he started to fly higher
and higher. Suddenly, he felt the wax melt over his shoulders and he fell into the sea. Daedalus heard
his desperate shouts but he could not help him and he only saw the feathers floating on the wáter. He
landed on the near island with tears in his eyes, thinking the gods had avenged Talus. He took off his
wings and destroyed his son´s destruction. Days later, the body of Icarus was washed on the shore
and Daedalus buried his son on the lonely island which has the boy´s name.
